A different cummins in my '59
Last weekend I test drove my recent swap of a cummins 6AT into my '59 F350 9' flareside pickup. This was my first diesel swap and my second engine swap. The truck started out as a factory dual wheel stakebed. I had bought the 9' box on a previous road trip and so needed something to mount it on. The 6At was a craigslist find. I have been running a 6AT, coupled to a th400 auto in a 54 gmc 3/4- 1 ton dual wheel dump bed. It was installed by a buddy a few years back and last year I got it from him in a complex tractor deal. Since I'm a ford guy I wanted my own version of this truck, so I'm building one. Engine specs are as follows: Source was a UPS truck. 6 cyl turbo, 210 cu in, 120 hp, GM pattern bellhousing, one of mine was built in '88, the other '89. About 36.5" from fan clutch to back of head. They were originally built for onan gensets, commercial and military, then automotive version for delivery trucks. I'm running a SM465 4 spd with chev clutch assembly. If you are interested in this conversion I would suggest you see my build in the 57-60 (fridge section). I still have questions on radiators, air cleaners, maybe a fuel preheater, and others. I will say there is some witty and not so witty banter on my thread to wade through, but anyone wanting to swap in a really fuel efficient smaller 6, could benefit from my experience. In retrospect it was a VERY easy fit, no clearance issues at all and I have it straight piped and it sounds awesome and ..... oh, never mind, just look at my thread called "kinda like a hot rod, but it isn't hot". You'll see. Now if I could just figure out how to post a video.........
