LOL! I've already checked - Dad's truck is still there, replete with the same tears tho slightly different fabric. Man, did Ford make a ton of that color interior or what!?

 

Having the exhaust removed relieves pressure on the exhaust manifold, making it somewhat easier to remove. So one fine weekend in October, I tackled the exhaust manifold gasket, head gasket, and valve cover gasket. I hadn't done a head gasket in a while. If you're thinking about it, and are in reasonably good shape, here's what I did. I took that treated 2x10 plank that had been bolted to the front wall of the bed, laid it from the top of the grill to the cowl, got my right foot down past the power steering pump onto the frame, and lifted it outta there in one fell swoop. My wife came out to the garage while I was staring at the exhaust manifold, and I told her it was going to be a major time suck to scrape that old gasket off. Remember the old commercial where the guy said, "My wife, I think I'll keep her."? Well, she came back out in old jeans with mugs of coffee, and spent the next six hours with Permatex Gasket Remover and some dull paint scrapers, chipping that baked-on crud off of there. I cleaned all the pushrods with brake cleaner and some very worn Scotchbrite pads, accessed more inaccessible areas to clean off three decades of goo and muck, and by Sunday afternoon had it all back together. I had one rocker arm that was sticking, and ended up removing the valve cover four times to tighten it down. I discovered the much-fabled heat riser was working perfectly.

I have the push rod cover gasket still to do on the side, as this one's shot - just waiting for warmer weather so I can do it outside, and determine if the oil pan gasket needs replacing as well.

If you're wondering where the temperature switch/sensor is, I've added a red arrow to show you. It's almost impossible to access with the exhaust in place, but they only cost a few bucks. Mine was shot, I had no joy on the temperature gauge, and replacing this fixed that immediately.

I also replaced the belts that weekend, the ported vac switch on top of the water outlet, and the heater hose that runs up to the air cleaner. And I continued to be amazed that this engine sounded brand new, after all the neglect the POs had demonstrated. I had one exhaust leak and two coolant leaks after I got Festus running on Monday, so it took a few more passes with the torque wrench to fix those, along with a dose of Bar's in the radiator.

 

Before installing that new carb, I replaced the air check valve. This one was male.

 

Gettin' there ...

Note the air intake tunnel wrapped with Gorilla Tape. One result of having that gonzo towing bar welded to the frame was that it pulled this intake (being connected to the inlet in the grill) down onto the heater hoses. 30+ years of heat and crud skeletonized this part. It was, I believe, the first part I pulled off the engine, thinking, "That'll be easy to find." More on that later.

 

Wow! There really was an engine in there! You have surely thanked your wife for all her help. Lucky guy. Take care of her.

 

She's a peach, alright, and still smokin' hot. Married 25 years next month. When I was shoveling out the cab looking for spare change, I found a single calendar page about 3"x4". Not a calendar, no other pages, just one month - July 1986, which was the month we met and got engaged. She definitely took it as a good omen!

 

After all the bulb replacements I did, still no backup lights. I successfully ordered the wrong switch from LMC, returned it, got the right one.

frame under the driver's door - but no harness to connect that plug to the tranny, about 2-1/2 feet away. Definitely not enough wire to get that plug to the transmission. I haven't found this harness/connection in any catalogs - does anyone have an idea, or worked on this? I'm assuming the interim wiring got snatched off by a root in the PO's field. Since I couldn't find it, I cut the plug off at the frame, used inline connectors and fresh wire to run over to the tranny with that plug on the end, and plugged it in like an old two-prong lamp. As soon as I put Festus in reverse, the backup lights came on. Hoo-ah.

And here's the original. There should be a nylon button protruding into the tranny about 1/2" - this one's worn completely down, and now holds a place of honor in the parts museum.

I guess all that bouncing around the fields with that tow bar on the front did 'em in - once I managed to get these off I saw they had no absorption left. If anyone collects genuine Ford factory parts, I will make you a sweet deal on four (4) pieces for your collection.

Muchas gracias. I used red inline connectors (the kind you crimp), with heat shrink over those, wrapped in electrical tape just because, then covered the whole thing with corrugated wiring shield. I have no idea how long that plug had been hanging beneath the truck; it was packed with dirt (of course), so I'm assuming those backup lights hadn't worked in years. Ford tough.

 

Movin' inside. We got the seat out, and I masked off the cushions and treated the brackets with Permatex Rust Treatment. Always nice to find a product that does what it's supposed to do. I scrubbed down the rust with a wire brush, wiped it off, and gave the brackets and the adjusting lever a couple of thin coats of this stuff.
