VIN there, done that (decoder needed...)

Hi,
I just bought a '77 Grumman-Olson with a Ford 300-6 and need to order some tie rod ends and kingpin rebuild kit (surprise). None of the parts places can work with the 11 digit VIN.

VIN: P60GVY46720
Type/GVW: P602
DSO: 721176
WB: 137
Body: O

These are all numbers on the plate on the dash. Couldn't find any other possible VINs, but i did find this number on the front axle: C4TA 3010-E A (in a square) 3 CK 23 ZM
I am glad to have found this forum

the part number starting with c4 indicates as follows C= 1960s, 4= 1964 T= truck the 3000 series numbers are for front suspension and steering, the ea is for slight design revisions since first produced.

It simply means your design axle first was produced in 64 and was installed for many years afterwords with possibly slight variations so I would say its original to your truck. You need to determine the weight ratings of your suspension and could probably guess quite easily what it is. Why dont you contact these guys.

After thought, Ill go on a limb and guess your truck is built on probably an F250 or F350truck chassis, especially since its a 6 cylinder and a 137 wheelbase. How many lugs and single or dual wheels?

years ago we had one of those and it was a 2 ton van , if thats what they are called !
if memory serves the front end parts were the same as a F600 , they did have different size king pins so it should be easy to just measure the diameter and length !

Thank you for your post, I am quite sure my key board will be getting greasy in in the coming months. The gvw is either 11000 or17000 lbs, the 2nd # is a drunk #1 or a 7 damn rivet gun. Subtract 7 and change and ? Is there a 5 ton chassis put into these parcel vans? Dually 20 In rims and 6 lugs.

"P60" in the VIN would probably mean P600. This thing probably has a GVWR of 16000 lbs or so.

The "P" trucks were similar to the "F" trucks but with forward controls. Numberdummy has explained them several times here if you care to search his posts--which I would do, but I've spent enough time in 1986 and newer Grumans with Ford and Chev chassis....

See below.

None of the parts places can work with the 11 digit VIN
All 1957/80 trucks, 1961/80 Econolines, 1966/80 Broncos have an 11 digit VIN / 17 digit VIN: 1981 to date.

NAPA and etc autoparts stores have never had a problem w/an 11 digit VIN. I suspect this has to do with the VIN's P60 Series code.

There may be no listings in autoparts store parts catalogs/computers for the P Series. Or the P60 Series code cannot be recognized by some VIN decoders.

VIN: P60GVY46720 / Type/GVW: P602 / DSO: 721176 / WB: 137 / Body: O

I did find this ID engineering number on the front axle: C4TA-3010-E
Welcome to FTE

Ach! The Book Antiqua font you selected is very difficult to read, especially with 67 year old eyes! I changed it to Verbana.

P60 = P600 (gas) / P Series Parcel Delivery chassis.

G = 300 1V I-6 Heavy Duty.

V = Kentucky Truck Assembly Plant.

Y46720 = 1977 (the trucks specific serial number).

Type/GVW P602: P600 (gas), 17,000 lbs. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating.

137" Wheelbase.

Body O: FoMoCo internal usage only.

DSO 721176:

72 = San Jose (NorCal) Ford District Sales office, where the original selling dealer ordered the truck from.

1176 = Domestic Special Order number. All P Series' are special orders because Ford only supplied the rolling chassis, front end sheet metal, dash and drivers seat (on most - rolling chassis only on others).

The bodies were all installed by outside body makers. So many bakeries used the P Series, it's been referred to by people since the 1950's as a bread truck.

Marked: C4TA-3010-E = Ford part number: C4TZ-3010-E .. 4,700 lb. capacity front axle.

D2TZ-3111-D .. King Pin Kit ~ 1972/77 P500/600 / Obsolete

GREEN SALES CO. in Cincinnati OH has 2 = 800-543-4959.

No FoMoCo Dealer, no other obsolete parts vendor has any.

C1TZ-3A130-A .. Right Tie Rod End ~ 1961/77 P500/600 / Obsolete

WESLEY OBSOLETE PARTS in Liberty KY has 1 = 606=787-5293.

BOYER FORD TRUCKS in Minneapolis MN has 2 = 612-378-0460.

GREEN SALES CO. has 12.

CARPENTER NOS OBSOLETE PARTS in Concord NC has 14 = 800-476-9653.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
C1TZ-3A131-A .. Left Tie Rod End ~ 1961/77 P500/600 / Obsolete

WESLEY has 1.

KINSEL L/M in Beaumont TX has 5 = 800-816-2894.

CARPENTER has 9.

GREEN SALES has 10.

Have you registered this thing yet? CA smog tests all 1976 and later vehicles. I hope all the emissions related parts are still present and in good working order, otherwise...

You'll be looking for these parts (I can help), because...if it cannot pass the smog test, it cannot be registered. There is no waiver if the parts are obsolete. It's fix it...or park it.

There is a 'tear-off sheet on the Pink Slip (title). Seller is supposed to fill this out with info you provide (name/address etc), then is sent the CA DMV. Releases seller from liability, notifies DMV of change of ownership.

If this was done, you have 10 days to register it, 30 days to pay the fees. If it cannot pass smog, you get an extension, but for how long, I don't recall.

Tears of Joy Numbers Dummy

N D et al.-

First sorry about the silly font choice. (my bad- Tracy) It would have been a long(er), hard(er) road without your assistance. We will follow up with your leads tomorrow and keep the thread posted. (?that's the right thing to do?)

Two more part number which would be helpful are for the steering dampener and gas filled front shocks- as long as we're ordering parts...

We will start another thread delving into the world of front end problems. "Death Wobble' sound familiar? Any suggestions as to past posts that might be helpful would be appreciated. We'll start reading up tonight.

Glad to be a part of this forum and hope to return as much or more as we receive whether it be here or the other side of the road...

A Thousand Thanks-
S&T

PS: Answer to ND's reg. questions- yes we registered the truck the next day. We have until the end of this month to smog it. The engine was rebuilt ten years ago right before it was non-op-ed. After ten years of sitting, started right up and we have had the carb rebuilt. We shall see... By the way, ND- are you in the San Jose bay region?

No parts catalog listing for P Series gas shocks, were introduced after P Series was cancelled.

Steering damper: Aftermarket, there is no Ford truck parts catalog listing/illustration for one. Probably installed by a front end shop or by an RV dealer.

Some P Series were converted to campers after the original owners sold them off. Some were bought/converted by hippes that wanted something larger than VW busses.

1967: Frito-Lay auctioned off 1000's, most had over 200,000 miles. Fleet manager (Al Pratt) at dealer (in Westwood, near UCLA) I was working for bought 500.

Al had them repainted white by Earl Scheib, then sold them with a 6 month warranty. It was a FIASCO that damn near bankrupted the dealer!

Only tune ups, other minor mechanical work was performed before they were sold. Al's only mechanic was 80 years old and senile.

So, it wasn't too long before many were being towed into the dealership with major mechanical problems. Dealer had to fix them and Al Pratt became known as Al P. Ratt!

Death wobble aka brake judder. Step on brake pedal, steering wheel can be jerked from your hands. One reason why: Brake drums are warped.

By the way, ND- are you in the San Jose bay region?
Nope.
Look at upper right corner for location (91745) in LA LA Land.

F/R shocks: I can give you the Motorcraft part numbers for the X/D shocks. NAPA and etc may be able to cross the numbers over to the brands they sell, but whether they'll be gas shocks...or not, I dunno.

ATTENTION ***NUMBERDUMMY***

NumberDummy, you seem to be a wizard of sorts with the Ford Grumman Olson VIN numbers. I'm having the same issue Ste-Van was having. I have a 1966 Ford Grumman Olson van....I believe it to be a "Kurbside" but can't find much information or history on them. I have 2 sets of numbers. I have the vin on my clear title "P40AL840101" I also have the number from the only plate I can seem to find in the cab anywhere and it reads "14493FKS6612T" and it's on the removable engine cowling which doesn't seem to be a very safe spot for a vin number....What are your thoughts? Any information you have would be greatly appreciated!

P60 parts

Hello. I have one of these trucks. It's an old California, San Jose Mercury newspaper truck. My radiator is leaking everywhere and is so rotton you can put your finger through it. Do you know where I could find a new one or will I need to fabricate one of similar size? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
