Buying a crate engine

I was thinking about buying a crate engine sometime down the road for my f150 with a 302. how does this one look and do you think its worth it? http://www.ford-motors-engines.com/ford-engine-553.html?make=FORD

I'd go with a semi built up 351w. Good torque on tap, and good potential.

That 94-97 block 351 you picked out has the best potential. It is a roller block so that is a big benefit. It will yield far greater torque than the 320HP 302 will. It all depends on what you want out of the engine. If you want it to rev like a sports car get the 302, if you want to tow or have decent power no matter the rpm get the 351. Just keep in mind there will be a little extra expense with the 351.

Would you be getting the carbed version or fuel injected? 400ft/lbs sounds perfect but i dunno, for me im thinking 375HP is even TOO much...if that is at all possible They say the power curve is from idle to 5500 which is acceptable, for once.

No kidding there, thats why I don't understand Ford. The 302 is as popular as the 350 was/is and yet they don't have a good good 302. My friend bought a 250hp crate 350 for $1500.

I was looking at all that engine came with and holly cow, its loaded!! Talk about turn key. Unfortunately I don't think I can afford it right now

Pastmaster, yesturday I saw a 275HP 350 with warranty and all for 1500. And to top it all off that 275HP was made at 4600rpm. It just makes you sick.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-Oct-02 AT 04:52 PM (EST)]how easy would that be to replace my 302 with the 351 with the 400ftlbs? I would have to get the EFI becuase of emmisions reasons. What other parts oulw i have to buy. i have a 5 speed with OD manual transmission.

The mazda tranny you have won't take any more than 300ft-lbs w/o crying so you better think about a tranny swap before bolting in a strong engine.

Primary rig is Green Thunder:
95' F-150 XLT 4x4, 302, 5 spd, MSD 6A, Flowmaster Exhaust, Sunroof, Clear corners w/ Diamond headlights, CD player with 2 10" subs and some 32" BFG Muds .

Thats it for now, saving for a stang. Check out my Gallery for a look-see.
