i have the same problem run good gas have tuner cold intake ,heard it could be the coils ,have them but have not got them in yet ,will let you know if it works

 

Ok after looking on this site and trying to figure out what was rattling/ fluttering on my truck I decided to dig into it. The first thing I did was replace the IWE solenoid and it still made the noise so I then replaced the IWE actuators. I needed the passenger side but I went ahead and put on the drivers side also. They are not that hard to change by the way. I got them from amazon for $70 a side. I drove the truck and still the same noise. I took off the skid plates and made sure there were no rocks and still had the noise. I then took off the check valve closest to the IWE solenoid and notice I could freely blow though it. I went to the parts store and got a new generic check valve and still same problem. I checked the other check valve and I could freely blow through it also so today I went to the ford dealer and got both check valves, installed them before I drove home and the truck is super quite! No noise at all!! I recently had the phasers done but they make a totally different noise and it is only after warm up at idle. My suggestion is start with the check valves and then go to the solenoid. I am sure this will fix the problem.

Gano..did you ever find out what is causing this noise. My 2010 Expedition (4x4) is making this exact noise. I have just replaced the IWE actuator/solenoid and both front IWE hubs. Please share your solution if, you found out! Thanks.
