Unhappy I am an IDIOT. What have I done?

Let me start off by telling you guys that I am very stupid for what I have done. I was driving down the road at 40mph and wanted to put in nuetral to rev the engine. Well I skipped right past neutral and put it accidentally into reverse. The truck screeched right to a stop and stalled. I was freaked out and put it back into park and started it. Everything seemed fine so I just drove it home 3 miles away. The truck has a 460 with an E40D trans. What should I look for? I'm worried because this is my first car (i am a teenager) and I really like my truck. Thanks in advance.

start saving money for a tranny rebuild...

but i've known one or two people that have done that, and they either shreaded a trans or it was fine.

the engine stalled out because of the stress from the torque converter...
but if the engine runs fine then its probably fine.

and dont do that again

I would know if I needed a tranny rebuild right? Dont you think it would have happened at that second? It wont happen again. It really freaked me out. It seemed to shift fine the rest of the way home though. ps. The tranny has about 80,000 original miles on it

if its running fine now you might have gotten lucky.

chances are if something was going to fail it would have happened then and there.

If you wanted to investigate a bit it never hurts to change the tranny fluid and filter. While you have the pan off of there is metal bits in there then it's not a good thing

Agreed.

Also, why did you want to rev the engine while you were driving?

You can lift the lever up from D to N without first pulling it back towards yourself, and it WON'T go into R that way.

Similarly, you can pull it down from R to D without pulling it back, and it won't proceed past D (or D in a circle, or however the OD things are designated).

im surprised these trucks dont have a safety that allows it to pop into neutral if you try to jam it into reverse at 40 mph.

I think he made a mistake but has hope because hes in here asking us and not laughing about it with one of his buddys..

I think you got lucky. I have done it by mistake also but not trying to rev her up. I have also gone 5th to first in a 95 VW jetta at 60 was going for 3rd ... missed lol and she didnt even grind. That did 800 in damage. Took out the top end All over a retard in a mustang..... Also popped the clutch in first at with a hand full of throttle 50mph on my 06 gsxr 1000 thinking I downshifted to 2nd. That put me in the hospital. Mistakes happen with testosterone as long as you live through it, learn from it. Dont let all the oldtimers in here tell you they never screwed up. Only makes you bigger caz you know how to own up to yours. Thats the mark of a good man to come and the only thing I have passed on to my son..

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...vemorphine.jpg Next time just think twice.... I learned to look at the indicator before popping the clutch. Stop playing ... Never! Keep in mind the rear end could have come around you and put you in a tree... or worse head on with another truck.

Hope the truck is ok and play safe out there kid ~

Justin

Check/change the fluid and listen/feel for any abnormalities. This could have been a $2,000 mistake easy. I'd hate to think what would happen if you dumped it back into drive at high rpm on a wet/slippery road. Use a little common sense, these trucks are big, powerful and heavy.
