heavy towing questions

I should know all this (I'm a trucker by trade) but I am afaid to burn this old motor out. I have a 95 psd crew cab drw 5spd with 4.10 gears that I bought recently. Truck is bone stock,,,,,I think. I bought a 42' fifth wheel to move about 200 miles away. Brought the trailer home today thanks to my gooseneck adapter. This trailer is big and heavy, tag says 10k lbs but I believe its a lil over that empty + tons of drag. Truck needs wot to pull it at anything over 55 and even at that. Am I gonna burn anything up on this truck running it for 3 hrs a wot???? Do it all the time in the big rig but thats a diffrent story. I want to order the sunpro gauges but am moving next week and time is of the essence,,,,, opinions plz,,, thanks

On flat ground it should do ok. Unplug the electrical plug on the MAP sensor and see if it's better. If it wad me I'd load it, watch the temp gauge and roll

I have a 97 f 250 with 3.55s. Our truck is mostly stock. And we pull a heavy horse trailer all the time, Think our trailer is in the 12-14k range. We do have a pyro which helps. But even with the 3.55/ it is fine.. It is not fast p hill and most of the time it has more power than I want to give it. If I drive a fast as it can. The egts get too hot.
I'm not sure what you mean by "wot" but. These trucks haul fine!

These trucks love being in the 2500-3000 RPM range while towing. Keeping your RPM's up there will lower your EGT's. Since you got a 5spd you don't have to worry about blowing your trans.

When I moved I had this 42' loaded and both truck and trailer grossed out at 33k. Pulled it two round trips for a total of 5k miles. It was harder pulling it empty on the return trip once with 40+ mph head wind in a down pour. Hardest pull I've ever done. Without a EGT gauge keep, like mentioned, your RPM's up above 2,500 rpm's.

We'll be pulling a 20' car hauler with 10,000 lb axles and I'm sure its going to be every bit and then some of that 10,000 lbs. The trans puked last week on our way outa town &I just picked up the truck today with a new rebuilt tranny and we'll be leaving on Sat. I wished I could have found a 5th wheel like yours! We will be making a bunch of trips with this set up.

It sure paid off on our move. We filled it to the top twice, I didn't know we had so much 'stuff'! Threw out a bunch before loading the trailer too.

Thanks for the replies. I ordered the sunpros for only 150 shipped overnight so at least I will be able to monitor egts. I can get an edge evolution shipped the same for 295---is it worth it could use a lil more power, but i know I'll have to keep it at min setting. I can also get a ts performance 6 position chip for same price,, is it any good???

The cheapest thing you can do to prolong the life of that tranny is to have an additional transmission cooler added. Your transmission shop may have already done this, but if not I would do so if you're planning on towing a lot. Keep it cool and it will last a lot longer.

Edge doesn't make a 6 position chip that I am aware of. The TS style 6 position chips that most people use is a very solid way to go. The difference is that a chip keeps all the programming in the chip, whereas the Edge products all re-write the program to your PCM. If anything goes wrong in the process of re-writing that data, your PCM is corrupted and your truck may or may not run. The only recourse is to have the original program re-loaded to the PCM. Sometimes the Edge unit can successfully do this, other times it cannot, and the PCM won't work until it is fixed or replaced. It is in essence the difference between running a new program on your home computer form a disk, and re-loading your operating system every time you want to run a new program.
