Fuel gauge problem

Hey eveyone.

Just bought my first Ford yesterday. 85 F250 6.9 diesel, T19 4 speed.

Problem:
Stopped for diesel just after purchase, topped off both tanks.
Fired up the truck, front gauge only reads 1/2 full, rear only 1/4 full.
Selected front tank, headed down the highway.
Within about 50 miles, the the gauge slowly dropped from 1/2 full to about an eighth inch under the E mark. I knew there was more fuel, so I kept going another 65 miles to my destination, with the gauge remaining at under E.

What gives? Electrical, or is it the float? Why would it start out reading half, then slowly drop?

Any help appreciated.

Wow, LOL that's like the exact description of my newly bought '85 E350 6.9 Van.

Except I didn't fill any tanks, and well, after alot of playing around with it, ran out of fuel, while the gauge was reading half on the front tank. Rear tank is full, and reads near empty.
