7.3 SD swap into a 1994.5 OBS
i have a newer 1999-2003 7.3 SD PSD complete engine just sitting around that id like to put into my 1994.5 PSD. my 1994.5 has 250,000 miles and has alot of blow by and its time for a new one. has anyone done this before? if the blocks are the same then would switching just the top ends over be the easy way to go? i was told the newer SD uses an eletric fule pump, and i was wondering if the newer 7.3 has the hole for the lift pump in it still? i really dont want to put an eletric fuel pump in but if thats what i have to do then ill probally go with a fass fuel set up. thank you to every one that posts on this

All the accessories are different, so you either have to modify your AC and wiring harness for the SD setup, or swap your OBS parts onto the SD block. That includes the front cover, IIRC.
There is no lobe on the SD cam for the mechanical pump, so you'll have to either swap the cam or convert to electric.
Valve cover wiring is different, use the OBS gaskets and engine harness
Keep the SD HPOP as its an upgrade. In fact, send it to Terminator Engineering and get it turned into a T500 before you install it, then send him your 15° pump back.
If you have the SD IDM, run it. It's a bolt in upgrade for the OBS.

could i just upgrade the SD engine with a new preformance cam? or would that even make a difference? and i do not have the SD IDM. i didnt even think to grab it before we sent the pickup to the scrap yard. the puckup was given to us from the fire department and i didnt own a 7.3 at the time and the only thing left in tact on that pickup was the engine so we pulled it and it still sits in the barn. how much of a difference would switching to the SD IDM make? i have a ts 6 position chip on it now

The SD IDM gives a little better throttle response. You can also modify your own if you are good with a soldering iron, or Swamp's can mod them as well too. Personally, it hasn't been entirely uncommon to see modded IDM's fail over the years I've spent on the forums, and I'd rather not risk is so I just run the stock SD IDM.

You'll have to do something with the injectors. The SD has split shots and your OBS has single shots. The splits will give you more fuel but you'll have to have custom programs on you chip to run them right. Or what I would do would be send the 250000 miles ones to somebody like Jim Rose and have them freshened up and just use them in the SD engine.
