yes they usually did (for the most part), best way to tell is if you can see a bulb/socket it has one, most trucks/cars from 1980 (i think) had one...or do...
OK, I turned the lights on and looked in the ashtray and can see light through a hole in the top. I think the socket came out and is just hanging in the dash. Does this sound likely? I think I will remove the ashtray and look.
My 87 XL has that snazzy "convenience package"...has an underhood light (currently not working-needs a bulb...d'oh!), ashtray light, glovebox light and the dome light with the two "map lights" on it...the only thing it seems to be missing (that I'll probably add) is lights under the dash, in the corners...

Yea..I never understood why those underdash lights weren't in there from the factory. If you do the mod, take pics and post.
For future reference, to remove the ashtray all you have to do is pull off the black/wood trim and remove the two 7mm screws holding in the metal part of the tray then pull it out.
