mud truck welding 9" rear

I have an 86 f150 4x4 with a 9" rear, is it okay to weld the rear up? trail rig only, actually doesnt even see that much trail as much as it does straight line mud bog racing. Running 33" mud tires. thanks!

Would consider a mini spool but i have never taken a diff apart and kinda scared to do so...

I'd mini spool it. Those things are $20 + the cost of an upgraded pin.

Its not a hard job at all

If its one of the ones that has 4 spiders with the 2 side gears I'd weld it up.

That way you retain the two cross pins. I weld just the side gears, fill in two teeth side by side, skip two, weld two, skip two, weld two, skip two, weld two and done.

Isn't the 9" carrier hard to weld for some reason? Thought I remembered reading that.

the spiders are inside the two carrier halves. Its not a open deal like a Dana or Sterling carrier.

He'll need to separate the carrier to weld the gears

Welding sucks on a 9", just use a mini-spool.

Mini spools r bad IMO. A single cross pin in a carrior that can accept two is bad news. Idk how many I've broke. But my welded one with the two cross pins never failed.

I think Critter makes a little more power to his axles than your wheeler does. In a strictly mud race truck, the mini spool will hold up fine until he needs to go full spool and upgraded axles

I don't care how much power is there.

Original poster mentioned "trail only" there fore I stand by my recomendation.

Even in a mud only rig, two cross pins would be better IMO.

I guess I'm doomed for failure since I have NO cross pins...

How many d60 or d44 carriers have you seen fail due to the single cross pin? The solid chunk of a mini spool with its single pin will hold up to whatever he throws at it, mud, trail, or other.

A D60 is not what we are talking about.

And I have broke pins in D44s

The mini spool is smaller in diameter than the case, allowing a gap between the mini and the case. That applys greater leverage on the cross pin than a welded rear would.

My mind will not be changed. And my experiance has proven that in a 9 inch rear a welded diff with 2 cross pins holds up better than a mini spool and even a full spool. (Yes I have broke one of them in half)
