Actually, that kind of reminds me of what my dad did once, when I was a kid...
We had an old 1972 AMC Jeepster "Commando" that started out in almost pristine condition but wound up becoming beat to hell - the driver's side was taken out by one of my dads buddies with his International Scout during a drunken hill-climbing expedition (with families in-tow) and the passenger's side was taken out by a drunk driver while it was parked in front of our apartment...
My dad, being the kind of guy he was in his drinking days, decided he didn't like the gutless little 6-popper that was in the Commando and decided to replace it with a 60's vintage Ford 302 that was pulled out of a wrecked F-series pickup....
Besides getting the clutch to mate up properly with the existing transmission, he had an issue with routing the exhaust - there wasn't enough room - so, he opted to run side-pipes, which were home-made and consisted of header mufflers welded to steel tubing that mated up with the headers on the 302...
It was probably the quickest (and loudest) damn little Jeepster in all of southern Idaho at the time, LOL
