Spray bottle full of water with some dish soap in it. Spray on old glue let it sit then scrape.
Or
Lay a towel down, pour boiling water on it and let it sit for a while and then scrape.
I've heard one of those little hand held steam cleaners or a hair dryer helps too.
Or
Convince wife how fun it is, get her to doing it and go fishing.
Lastly, call Fire Department and set up a "Burn to Learn" with them.

You mean I didn't invent that? Oh well, doesn't work anyway. Wife beats me to the pickup, fishing pole in hand.

A industrial solvent used in paints, you might be able to get some from a commercial solvents place. Keep the windows open, no flames, wear a respirator and gloves, wipe on with a rag.
It makes short work of adhesives in no time.
