What oil weight to run in 5.0?

I have a 1995 E150 van with the 5.0 and the owners manual is confusing to me. First it recommends 5w-30 then goes to say that in this engine the 10w-30 weight should be run. I currently put the Motorcraft 5w-30 semi synthetic blend in it. I live in Chicago where in the winter can get into the single digit temps. Opinions?

Do as Hemieater says. In summer I'd run at least 10-40 or 20-50 depedning on how many miles the engine's got on it.

Really you can run heavier weights like that in this motor? I don't like mixing oils and I don't think Motorcraft sells a 40 or 50 weight. Motor has 121k miles.

Motorcraft sells 15-40 diesel oil,(which is fine in a gas engine), and 10-40. The more miles there are on it, the looser the clearances are in the bearings, for that reason, I like to increase oil weight in older engines.
