06 Ford Escape Sounds Like Diesel

On the way to work this morning I stopped at a stop sign. It shut off on me. When I restarted it there was a lot of noise. There was a significant power reduction for the very short distance i limped it back home. The noise did increased with the rpms of the motor.

We put the OBD tester on it to check and it showed the following codes
p0340 - Camshaft Position Sensor A bank one circuit malfunction
p0171 - System too lean bank 1
p0175 - System too rich bank 2
p0340 again
p1336 - Manufacturer control ignition system or misfire
p2197 o2 sensor struck lean. bank 2 sensor 1
p2198 - o2 sensor struck rich bank 2 sensor 1

I was not expecting to see so many codes reading contradictory to each other.

When it is running, only of a very short time, it sounded like a diesel tractor. the noise was coming from the rear of the motor near the firewall in the top portion of the motor or at least that's how it sounded.

Any ideas would be much appreciated

I preciate it. Somebody had mentioned that too. Any idea what causes the noise and if it would happen pretty much all at once?

Thanks again. I'm at a loss

I have no idea why it would happen all at once. The noise I had was the "broken" pieces of the converter rattling.

Did you find the problem and if so, what fixed it?

Not yet. None Of the converters tested bad. We took it the ford garage and let them diagnose it. They said the motor is out of time but could not tell us why . We are thinking the chains or tensioners but haven't been able to check. Also not sure if the valves are gonna be alright. So still no answers. I couldn't find any mention of people having similar problems anywhere.

Does it do this at idle, when pulling off iin drive, when in reserve or all of the time? Did you drive it to garage?

It does it all the time. Gets worse as Rpms rise.

I am really curious as to the solution to this issue. I have just started getting the same EXACT issue in my 06 ford escape. All the same error codes, and the exact described issue.

Hey
It turned to be a timing chain tensioner. It was stuck closed and it didn't jump a tooth on the chain. It was allowed to loosen up enough to cause severe engine roughness.
Any way I can help ya lemme know.

Thanks a bunch. I brought it to the shop this morning for a full diagnostic. I will mention this to them if they don't already. It is odd to see another person with the same car with the same LIST of error codes and the exact issue.

Mine was just stuck closed. Pulled it out and pumped it then it worked fine. Replaced it anyways and it ran like normal.

Shop just got back to me. He found the same issue you had with the tensioner. Recommended total engine replacement as it was at 145k and "making loud sounds" but that only started with this issue.

Looking at 1.3k for total chain replacement and tensioners or 3k for a total engine replacement.
