Lightbulb covering for work bench

Hey fellas. I built a big (4X8) foot workbench in my garage and put it on wheels. It is really just two sheets of 5/8 multistrand (smoothest sides up), on a 2X4 frame with 4X4 legs. The wheels are cast iron with hard rubber tires.

I do a lot of different things in my garage. Presently I’m rebuilding a riding lawn mower. It was a real rust bucket when I got it.

I use 1/4 hardboard because it is disposable, and with one white side, I flip the top to white when the wife wants to use my bench as a garage sale prop.

There is plenty of storage on the lower deck for all my bench top power tools, and I store extra sheets of 1/4 oak etc plywood under the disposable hardboard on the top deck to keep them flat and clean. Just don’t go drilling through them...no not yet.

I also have two other benches without removable tops. One is 6 feet long and 2 feet deep. (I find much deeper and it is hard to reach the tools on my pegboard.) This one has a bench vise mounted to it. The other one is 8 feet long, 2 feet wide (see a theme forming here?) It also has a 2-foot wide shelf above it. I use this one mainly for boxing up stuff I sell through my website and on e-bay.

I will get a photo in later tonight if you want.

All in all my big bench cost me around $50-$60 bucks to build. The others came out to around $20-$30.

Hope this all helps.

Gezz, "Eric in tn" 1/4 in. steel? Do you suppose that will be enough?

My bench has a 3/4" plywood top covered with industrial floor tile. It wipes off easily when I spill grease or oil.
