cam position sensor

any ideas? I've gone thru 3 cam position sensors in 1 1/2 years. does the same thing each time, nothing funny running wise check engine lights up. check the code p0340 clear the code. sometimes comes right back on others will stay off for a week. the first one was worn on the end slightly. the 2nd was on the side near the tip of the barrel. no wear on the 3rd but looked like it had been given a coating of grey antiseize. after the 2nd I pulled the valve cover everything looked ok. the cam gear was an 1/8" from the sensor, no slop in the chain, no wear on the cam/balancer shaft teeth.

the only oddity is a slight valve train tapping noise that went away with a heavier weight oil.

thanks guys

I'd get your next one from a genuine Ford dealer and see if that helps. Also the CPS connection may be just worn out from all of the new inserts. Maybe smear the CPS connection with silicon on the next one.

Check the cam end-play. The cam gear might be hitting the sensor.
