These SD behemoths are tipping the scales at 8500lbs and that is a good amount of weight to have to smooth out from the springs. Then there is all of the death wobble issues some people are reporting or have reported fixing, you included. Could such inferior front shocks be part of the problem?

I look at it this way. If Rancho is willing to put their name on such an inferior product such as the SD OEM FX4 shocks, where else in their business are they willing to cut corners? Personally, I'm done with Rancho products.
The answer to the death wobble question is yes, I think. I had it and the dealership installed new steering dampener, front shocks (Rancho) and did the alignment at 11,8XX miles.

All was good until the week before last at ~ 21,XXX miles, the wobble came back. Took it to the dealership again and they did nothing --- long story and will post when Ford Customer Service finally resolves the issue.

Bought the Bilstein 5100 and had them installed yesterday. I have not had the wobble yet, but in fairness I have not driven a lot of miles.

My comments on the Bilsteins is like most of the others that I have read. Seems like I have better control of the truck, but I will drive ~ 100 miles today on roads that I have experienced the wobble on and post the findings.

I hope it's not that one or I got duped, I paid $240 for mine.

Below is what's stamped on the stabilizer I got. I haven't put it on yet but will confirm it's fitment today or tomorrow (wife keeps buying xmas decorations to put up...). It came with a bracket so I'm guessing that's what's needed to fit it. When you look up the part number below, it comes up as a Dodge stabilizer but my receipt says 08+ Ford high mount steering stab. We'll see. Maybe I'll go put it on now and save the Rancho's for tomorrow.. Will report back.

I got mine from Truck Gear (8lugtruckgear.com), their part number is 732-CS-FHMS-08.

It fits, I just dropped it in real quick. You'd definitely need the bracket they supply though if anyone decides to buy the stabilizer anywhere else. I pulled a little bit of nitrogen out and took it for a test drive. It may need a little more but I need a longer test drive.

I gobbed it up with fluid film, we'll see how it does this winter.

You guys already know what they look like but I snapped a couple photos for the heck of it...

I just replaced the 250 mile old racho's on our new super duty with these bilsteins after the multiple positive reviews on this site!

We are about to make a 1,500 mile road trip up to Canada, so I'm glad I could squeeze in the shock swap before we left!

One thing I'd like to note about sarge's video. He mentioned using a vise grip at the top of the shaft to prevent the shaft from spinning while tightening the 19mm nut. Even though the possibility of this actually causing damage is slim, there is still a chance that the grooves created by the vise grips can damage the internal shock o-rings.
A easier way to secure the shaft, and prevent damage to the shock internals, is to use a 6mm allen wrench at the top of the shaft. Most all Bilstein shocks I've dealt with (a lot) have had this feature, and It really makes install nice and smooth.

Here is a quick phone pic to show how I kept the shaft from spinning

Hope this helps!

I have seen two different stabilizers posted, the one above and this one below. There is obviously a difference in quality and price but will the $80 Monotube shock work just as well for street applications? I would hope it would be an upgrade over stock.

I can't say with certainty that it would but after handling the oem one, I'd imagine anything aftermarket would be an improvement..

FWIW, the 7100 I bought was well worth the money, major improvement over the oem. It doesn't dip/dive into every road imperfection, tracks straight. We'll see for sure when I get the video camera back out.

I might be the first guy on here to switch from Rancho 9000's to Bilstein 5100's. My review is after the 9000's are way better than the stock crap, the 5100 Bilsteins are WAY better than the 9000 Rancho. Some things I noticed on a 20 miles test driver were less rattles and harshness in the cab. Rattles I used to hear in the cab going over bumps are no longer there with the 5100. On the highway I noticed the truck tracked better and bumps did not upset the steering as much. I made a video to compare the sizes and rebound of the two shocks, but have yet to upload it. I can't wait to see how the truck reacts with a trailer load. I will be traveling up to Fort Wayne, IN. this week to pick up mixer truck parts with a trailer so I will see how the new shocks act in those 700 miles.

Shock compare - YouTube

I decided to quit being lazy and uploaded my video. My arms were jello after the install so trying to compress the shocks were a sad display of manhood.

Looking forward to hearing your thougts after a couple of weeks. Some folks have said the Bilsteins are too firm. Did you play with the adjustment **** on the 9000s?

Yes, I tried setting 5 at first which seemed to be ok. Its still had that kind of rolling feel. But at that setting I also noticed more wobble in the wheel when hitting bumps. I just ran the shock at 9 for the rest of the time. I would not say the Bilsteins are too firm. But I guess I should say my preference is for a truck to hit the bump, and them the movement be over. I don't want a old Lincoln TownCar feel, I want a BMW M3 feel where it might be tight, but its quick.

EDIT: Try the shock at 1 setting......... Might as well not have a shock.
