Nice truck. It sounds great and you've made a lot of progress. Keep on truckin'.

too funny Beaver. Maybe I'll try that - after I get the buckle end of the seat belts installed.

Yes, the wife has noticed the truck. It's been in the garage where her car is supposed to park for going on 10 years. What I'm trying to avoid is her noticing it in the check book.

progress report.

tonight after work I painted the hood - in my garage. Too much crap fell in the paint - should have done a better job sweeping the tarps and cleaning the "paint booth". At lest there are no runs or drips and the specks will buff out next summer. It will be nice to get it installed because I don't have much room for it in the garage and no where to store it. It was jammed in the back of my suburban while I was working on the cab.

Also got the hood hinges installed. Note the home made shoulder bolt. The PO drilled and tapped the blind nuts on the hood for 7/16" bolts. I drilled the hinge holes to 9/16 and made a 7/16 x 9/16 brass bushing. I see in a week or 2 if it works - paint on hood needs to dry.

Also installed the hood lacing - I splurged and bought the ss screws but did';t like the idea of running them into sheet metal right where rain water will soak in so used a cotton ear swab to dob some primer on the pilot hole and run the screw in and hope the primer will seal the hole.

My truck was missing the hood lace, and after the first rain, I found standing water around my #5 and #6 spark plugs (226 I6). I'm not ready to replace the hood lace yet, so I bought some weather stripping from Home Depot for $4 and stopped the "leak".

That's what they call it. see pg. 102 in the 2011 mid-fifty catalog. Mid Fifty F-100 Parts - Catalog Request The rubber one costs $10 and the ss screws are $5. Mid-Fifty gave me 2 extra screws because I told them my truck had 11 staple holes. It actually has 10 holes but I messed up one screw tapping the threads in all the holes. They also offer rubber bumpers to replace the lacing. Some kind of rubber bumpr is needed to keep the hood flush with the cowl and to keep the 2 parts from banging together and knocking off paint. These trucks have a ton of rubber seals. Also on pg 102 is the hood to radiator seal and the upper radiator valance seal.

Nice truck, I can blame my dad on my Chevy in the 54, he put it in in 69-70. I wish mine had your paint, but I didnt have the patience to take off the cab and shoot everything, will have to cobble paint with the cab last.

thanks calorchard. I blame my chevy engine on me and my son. We are going for cheap and 77 Chevy wagon cost us $100 and parts to build the sbc are pretty economical. I got the 700 R4 free. Hey, I like the GL1200 in your stable list. Maybe I should add my ST1100 to my list.

Hey Dan, I like the color of your cab, is the hood the same as it looks different?
The paint booth you are using I take is home made, did you paint your cab in it too?
Keep up the good work and keep us posted with the pics!

thanks *****. Yes, the hood is the same color - I guess between the fluorescent lights, white tarp, and my wife's camera it comes out looking gray. The "paint booth" is a 8 x 8 tarped space in my garage and I did shoot the cab there too but had made it about 12 x 8 for that job. I use a box fan with a plastic tube stuck out the side door for ventilation and dust control. My neighbor hasn't complained yet.

A little about the paint color. About 8 years ago a guy at work bought a gallon of NAPA acrylic enamel, a baby blue off the shelf standard color. He intended to paint one of our fleet trucks - not sure what he was thinking because we don't do automotive painting at all at our shop and tend to care less about what our trucks look like. Anyway, I talked my boss into letting me have the paint. Free paint fits my budget. I might have gone with the Sea Sprite green in acrylic urethane if I was going to buy the paint but that might be to "wow - look at me" for my body work and painting skill level.

Dan do you have any pics of your paint booth setup? I would like to paint all the interior and metal mating surfaces myself at home. Assembly the cab and frontsheet metal along with the box and have it painted in a proper paint booth. To scared to attempt that myself!!!

It's not fancy or very clever, just tarps hung from the ceiling. Some florescent lights added inside the 8ft x 8ft area. A box fan to help blow the dust out the door. Kinda hard to keep it warm this time of year - at least with the fan on high. I don't need warm when I'm welding patch panels or grinding, not that it gets very cold here in NW Oregon, but it I like it at least 50 for painting so I leave the fan off and the heater on until I'm ready to spray and then turn the heater off and the fan on while I spray.
