Does Expedition Really Suck as Tow Vehicle?

Whoever said that dosent know Jack..... hmmm I don't know Jack either.... but I have a 2000 Eddie Bauer with the 5.4 and Easily pull my 1959 Dodge classic car anywheres I want too. My 59 Dodge outweighs anything made today and my Expedition pulls it like im pulling a riding mower behind me. Don't worry, you can tow just fine with an Expedition.
Most reviews you read on the internet are always negative anyways. I ignore them.

I've pulled a HD trailer (18ft approx) w/ on board brakes and brake controller in the expy. Brakes great and I honestly can't feel the weight Im pullin...granted trying to leave a red light at full power under heavy load its quite obvious it needs more muscle.
Under normal tow and easy take offs the XP gets you and ur load safely where ur going w/ out breaking a sweat.

I have a 2000 expedition with the 5.4 liter. I can't believe just how horrible it tows. All I tow is a 3000 lb pop up camper so it was a huge surprise to me. Yeah it tows alright on flat ground but when going up the mountains you really know it. anything above 8,000 feet will totally choke it out. I was pulling a 6% grade at 9,000 feet with my 3000 lb pop up behind me totally floored in 2nd gear and only going 25 mph. Of course higher altitude means less power but come on.
Besides this the Expedition has been a very reliable vehicle, I have 147k on it and not any trouble. The 13mpg I get in town & 17 on the highway really sucks but what can I do? Yeah it's a nice SUV but not for towing of fuel mileage.

Which engine do you have in your Expedition. If it's the 4.6 it most likely will not do well towing, especially at altitude. The 5.4 is the best choice of only 2 as the 4.6 would like a gear change to about 3.90 - 4.11 or even 4.56 to be fairly happy towing or in the mountains. The 4.6 has enough work to do just moving it's own 5,000+ pounds down the highway and even a smallish trailer will make it strain. It would have been nice if Ford had made the V10 available as an option. There is enough room for it.

if you can flip the bill take a look at an aerolite. you get alot trailer size with out the weight. A friend of mine has a 32 foot with a slide double bunks and pulls it with an f150 with now problems i do not know the weight but he keep up with me when i pull my TT with my excursion. another thing to keep in mind is the total weight of tow vehicle + occupants and luggage + trailer weight + contents in the trailer then look at the owners manual for max weight. I have an F150 4.6 it can tow my trailer but with now problems but what is the cost of trashing the F150 because i am over my total weight limit. Just be safe and watch your total weight

That's just about where they are in the Excursion, isn't it?
Actually, I think they would be in the same place as on a 5.4 as the block appears to be just 2 cylinders longer in the front. With electric fans there should be enough room.
It would be a interesting conversion to do.

I had a properly equipped '07 Expy towing my 7500lb 28' TT last spring/summer. It was fine on flat level ground...motored right along at 60-65 and I got about 10MPG. As soon as I hit any sort of grade, it struggled. I went through WV, NC, etc on the way to and from FL and got under 8 MPG(tuned with an SCT) going through the hills. I decided to upgrade to a diesel and have never looked back. Another thing that was awful were the mirrors on the newer body style. They are awful for towing anything of significance...nothing aftermarket is designed for the vehicle, so you are stuck with buying a universal kit with less than stellar results. I had to butcher the crap out of a set to get them to not vibrate at 45MPH and over.
My wife and I loved the vehicle, but we need something that can tow our toys all year round and the Expy fell short. The vehicle was perfect until I connected a trailer.

If they put a V10 in an Expedition the back plugs would be sitting in the cupholders. That's just about where they are in the Excursion, isn't it?
well the last back two cylinder ar more like under the dash right by the radio and they are a P.I.T.A to get the COPD's off and spark plugs out. You basically have to lay on top of the engine.....
