Do it the right way and get a state-issued new title as salvage or construction

Yep, what Ross said. I'm under the impression it's illegal to transfer a tag and a title. There are options with these old trucks, it takes some research cause if your DMV is anything like mine they have no idea what they are talking about on anything :\

You will have to find out what procedure to follow at your state DMV. Since this truck has no tag on the cab you're best option is to find the VIN on the frame and take that to the DMV. In many states these older vehicles are treated more leniently than new vehicles, they actually understand that these trucks do get pieced together from piles of parts by folks who are not running chop shops. You can get a reproduction ID tag from various vendors but it will be blank unless you can provide legal documentation to show proof of ownership. Good luck...you may find it easier to use this truck for parts and to buy another "legit" truck.

Gonna have second most of the info provided here. It's only legal to sell another the vin tag, if it matches the title, and includes the vin stamped frame, since the id tag was a screw on, not riveted on item. I agree fully with Charlie too. Find the vin stamped on the frame, and take that into DMV. In Oregon, they will do a search through their data base. Vehicles not registered within the last 10 years, are often purged, and all vehicles, unregistered prior to 1980 are purged. There would be no owner info. The vin, and a bill of sale/transfer, would suffice in Oregon, and most states have very similar laws. Get a local officer to inspect the id number, and run it. If it comes back clear, get that stated by the officer. Every state has a "vin inspection" procedure. Take that cleared inspection sheet, along with the bill of sale/transfer to DMV, and apply for a new title. It isn't difficult, but some times requires persistance.
