Foundation crack (vertical)...earthquake?

I honestly don't think you have anything to worry about. Theres steel in there to reinforce the concrete. Now if it starts to crumble thats when you need to be concerned. If you are concerned, get some Urethane caulk and seal the crack so it doesn't draw moisture in it. It does come in a concrete color.

How old is the house? To me, it looks nothing more than a normal crack that is not below the surface (not deep). I don't think it is anything to worry about. If your that concerned about it, use some marking paint and keep an eye on it to see if it gets longer or wider. I work construction and see bigger cracks than that in new homes.
Cracks in a new house makes sense...This was represented as a crack that happened suddenly after 17 years, Something had to cause it. I may be biased as my business is Strucrual Engineering, but If it were my house I would take IB Tim's advice. Fill it with caulk and see what happens, The house certainly will not fall down! In my opinion, Sterling seemed concerned, so I did and still will recommend having a professional Engineer look at the crack. Good luck!
