Cool Bertha66! I make it to Prineville occasionally to see a buddy so maybe I will see you on the road sometime!

Question for all you pros....
How difficult and what would the pros and cons be of switching my standard tranny over to a C6? I have a friend willing to sell me a 390 with new C6 (300 miles on both) for 400.00 and would really love to put the whole combo in....
Thanks in advance!

The C6 is a great transmission, I loved the one I had behind my 390. In a gas 4x4 I prefer an auto tranny.

It'll be easier on your knees and your right arm, might get better mileage, easier to drive in traffic... I'd go for it!

X2 with what Evan says. I had a 78 with the 400 and a C6 (it died a horrible death or I'd still have it), over 200k with nothing but routine maintenance. Folks still have their 72 with C6 and a 390 and almost 300k.

The C6 was friggin solid. The only downside is that the torque converter doesn't lock so I doubt you'll see a MPG improvement.

The new C6 out of a 4x4? And does your truck have a married transfer case or a divorced case? The tail shaft will be differant lenghton a two wheel drive.
You will also have to hook a shifter for the c6, like a B&M cable shifter.
I was using my Bronco to haul my race trailer, it wieghs in about 6700lbs, and after frying 2 C6's in it, I got the 76 F250 4x4 with a 4sp. For me a chutch is cheaper than a trans. But that was alot of wieght for a Bronco.

I'm surprised a 6700 lb trailer would bother a C6. I would suspect either too small of a cooler or a really tall rear end.

Thanks for all the info....Now I have another newb question....
The C6 is out of a car and I do have a married transfer case, that being said, how hard will this swap be? additional parts to hunt down? etc.
Next question.... I was looking at the transfer case in both my newly acquired trucks and they are WAY different. The 76 had a Dana tag with a Type 21 on it. The other in the 78 I could not find a tag on, just numbers cast into the case (C11415) any idea which one is better? Trying to take the best from both and make one good truck.
Thanks again everyone!

First trans was weak, and the 2nd was a rebuilt, blew 2nd and reverse going up Gov camp. The 1 in it now was rebuilt and built up to pull the trailer and I have pull it over Hood with no problems.

I do not think that a car C6 will work, but But I would check with a trans shop, AAMCO in Bend has been good to me in the past.

Since it's from a car it's a 2wd trans, so the tail housing and probably the tailshaft itself is different. It would need to be taken apart to switch the shaft IIRC.

Or you could run a divorced t-case behind it...

Sounds like it might be more trouble then it's worth. Thanks for the info, I may call AAMCO and see what they would charge to swap the parts over.
Thanks again!

Try to get the 390 though, if it's running good!

the swap is easier than putting a stick in it. as far as a tranny builder clays transmissions in sandy is about the best i've seen. he does alot of race stuff. and uses that to his advantage. i have his phone # if you want to call and ask him. clay is a pretty cool guy. and if you have any questions he may have answers for ya. i worked with him before i moved to omaha. hey if we can put a 700r4 behind a 409 chevy he can do just about anything. we did rear diffs/front diffs etc. drivelines all that.
