I know older ford trucks would spit out power steering fluid if you pushed the wheels back and forth without the motor running. Possibly while towing it pushes out fluid and then when you drive it burns up the pump or just gives "bad pump" signs because of low fluid?

I think you may be right on with this! I will look under the truck for sings of leaking fluid in the morning. IF IT WARMS UP! I did add fluid last night and the burping brake pedal and moaning pump went away. Thanks much for your input!
