Or Both!!!! That is what I discovered. Noticed oil in degas bottle and UOA showed traces of coolant in the oil.

Usually you get oil in the coolant system, this because you have more oil pressure than cooling system pressure.

How long do you guys recommend before changing the filter the first time? I put mine in the first part of June. Was thinking that come september would be a good time to change and check it out.

This is true when engine is running, but when the engine is shut down the oil pressure goes to zero but the cooling system can still be pressurized till it cools down.

Also if the coolant and oil get mixed in the oil cooler you will have cross contamination regardless of the difference in pressure.

I was told every three months for the first year, then yearly after that.
My first filter was pretty gooey after three months.

For what it's worth, I mounted mine in a different place than most do.

Marv,
If the filter is mounted low like yours is, do you loose alot of fluid when changing the filter?
I would think a valve on each side of the base would eliminate this.
What do you think.

It looks like the oil cooler was the issue, the original o rings where hard as plastic and I could see on the filter head side where the oil was pushing past the small ring. All that is left to do is run in to town in a few hours and try and find some ELC and a new t stat.

I'm not going to run a blackstone,I'm pretty sure there is/was at least trace coolant in the oil, I'll just change the oil and coolant filter again( I changed it when I did the cooler) in another 500 miles. Delo is up to $17 a gallon here so by next Monday I will have spent $240 in oil changes

I know what you mean Steve. I had just changed my oil a few hundred miles before I noticed there was oil in the degas bottle. New oil, filter and ELC. It sure adds up.
