Starting a Scrap Metal Business????

So I don't know where else to ask this question. I am in high school and need some way to make money. I have a truck and wanted to start scraping. I was wondering how to get started in this(business license? advertising? etc)? I know some places where I can get metal but don't want to waste my time or money. Any help is appreciated

Well, first off..you need to find out what exactly it is that you want to do as far as scrapping..you say you know where to get metal, but you need to make sure that it is legal for you to take it..it is illegal to take metal from private property, etc.

And if you're going to start your own business..you need to get a taxpayer ID, as well as a D.B.A. Form (Doing Business As) to secure a business name. This will let you set up a legit "from home" business, and keep the IRS off your rear end.

Not trying to sound like the mean guy here..just trying to look out for you, brother. Play it safe and be smart.

Best of luck to you

Guys around here run adds signs n such. Some make 800+ a day doing it. Market is flooded with them. Most have moved on to stealing it out of yards and what not. I had a truck stolen for scrap out of Ashland, MA. They caught the tow truck driver after the fact but never pinned the guy that crushed my K5... " Nothing we can do" If I saw a scraper on my land again he would be recycling lead ***** for weeks

You don't need a biz license to start out in recycling (most of it is also cash) but you do need to have your truck commercially registered if its not. That can get you fined and make the load worthless.

Make some biz cards and if you see junk on peoples property drop it in the door. Let them call you ! Ads in the paper can get pricy quick most don't buy it anymore also. Make a crags list ad for your area etc. Yellow page ads work to a degree but they are big money also. Full page was 30K when I used it to advertise. Smile, shake hands, and keep it honest and your name will always spread! GL bud, I wish you the best.
