Am I the only person that still likes the 5.4?

Hi everyone! Been reading on here for awhile but first post. I have a 2010 crewcab xlt 4x4 with a 5.4 and 373 gears. It really seems you guys are down on this motor around here. Comparing it to the new 3.7 and saying the 5.0 feels 100 horse stronger. I did not get to drive the 3.7 but i did drive the 5.0 and ecoboost before my purchase. The 5.0 seemed to have more at high rpm than the 5.4 but unless i was mashing down on the gas i couldnt tell much difference. The ecoboost, i loved the way it made power from idle and it seemed to have even more up top than the 5.0 sadly it was out of my price range. Not trying to bash anyone elses truck just starting a conversation!

I have a 2010 XTL Screw 4x4. I love it. It is a beast. Has no problem outrunning those rice racer type cars.... or pushing them off the road . The ecoboost is interesting but even if I had to buy an '11 this year, I most likely would've stuck with the V8. Been driving a very similar engine since I was 15. I like it. My truck serves its purpose and looks damn good doing it.

Yah for a huge carbon footprint

I also have a 2010 XLT Screw 4X4 5.4 but w/3.55 axles. My son has a 2011 Ecoboost Lariat Screw 4X4 (3.55) and there is no comparison as far as I am concerned. His truck seems smoother, more powerful, and has instantaneous throttle response at any speed. My 5.4 has difficulty merging into faster traffic w/o flooring it and then there is the l-o-n-g hesitation before the transmission determines the correct gear and the motor starts to rev. The Ecoboost reminds me of my 6.0 diesel...when you push down on the accelerator (other than from a standing stop), it accelerates instantly and agressively. My next truck will more than likely have the Ecoboost or whatever has the most get-up-and-go. I'd like to hold off until the next redesign, so I'll have to stay away from the son's truck so I won't be so aware of what I could be driving.

I still love my 2005 5.4 3 valve. So much low-end torque, and instant throttle response compared to other small block V8s. Not so great on fuel, but still love it.

The 5.4L suffers from very narrow bore spacing and a small bore. This results in small valves and lack of airflow and power. The 3 valve designed helped but without supercharging, they are limited on power. The 5.0L is a new design that cured this problem. The local deals here are on the 5.0L trucks right now.

I still love my 2010 5.4l. Good power and I average 18-22mpg most of the time (unless I put my foot into it too often lol). Comparing it to the new engine lineup (I've driven the 3.7 3.5eb and 5.0) is kind of an apples to oranges type of situation, the new motors are way more advanced in engineering and design so of course they are going to be "better" in many ways over the modular family. Does that make the mod motors bad? Not at all! They have an extensive 15+ year track record of reliability and longevity with a few blemishes here and there but what engine design hasn't had it's share of flaws from time to time that had to be worked out?

I can't complain about my 06 5.4L. It tows really well, gets decent fuel mileage and since I purchased an SCT x3 Programmer with custom tunes there is absolutley great throttle response. No lag when changing speeds or gears. Before programming, I did not like the lag when mashing on the throttle nor the way it shifted.

I have nothing against the EB engines but I am one of those people who will not buy the new and improved untill it has proven itself.

I love both my 5.4's One is in my 01 F150 4x4 reg cab long bed, the other in my 2010 screw 4x4. both with 3.55 ls gears. I think ford has done great job engineering and developing this new line of motors. It is because of this forward thinking approach that the F series is such a great truck. I trust both my trucks to make it to the moon and back! The 5.4 has never let me down. It may not be as powerful or as economical, but it is a great motor that as long as you take care of it, it will and has taken care of you. 01 5.4 160k and still goin 2010 5.4 25k in less then one year off the lot new.

Love my 2010 5.4. It may not have as much power or get as good of mileage as the newer motors, but it is proven to last. I am willing to bet the new motors will last as well, but I don't want to be a guinea pig.

Thumbs up 2010 5.4

I also like my 5.4. It is way ahead of the older trucks I've had, smooth and response isn't as bad as some of the reviews I've read.

I have towed my 7,000 lb TT and it did a good job with the max tow and 3.73 gears.

It works for me, at least for now it is very quiet and merges quite well even with the TT behind it.

The 5.0 has the same bore centers as the old 4.6 and 5.4 (3.937 inches) but does have a very slightly larger bore of 3.629 inches vs 3.552 for the older engines. So it does not *solve* the bore center problem totally, but deals with it effectively with 4 valves, higher compression, and other technological improvements. But the power and torque come at a higher RPM than the 5.4's. The bore increase is .077 inches, less than a tenth of an inch, so it is no major change.

The 5.4 is a solid engine design (not without some historic flaws) and the introduction of a replacement engine series doesn't make it any worse.

Amen brother. Was towing my 5500 lb travel trailer this weekend, and I would have loved to have some more ratios to chose from. Second gear on the hills feels a little too low.
Very impressed with the power of the 5.4 though. I never really tested it until I got this trailer, but it'll go up hills as fast as I want.
