Fuel tank selector valve - how to test.

Fuel tank selector valve - how to test.
75 F250, 460, camper special, 2WD.
Problem:
Tank selector switch is set to the front tank which is almost full of fuel. The rear tank is empty. When I switch to the front tak, there is a click noise that comes from the tank selector valve. The truck does not start - it continues to turn over as if it were out of gas. The selector valve would not normally make any noise when changing tanks, which makes me think it is going/gone bad.
Temporary solution:
I connected the fuel line directly from the front tank to the fuel pump and bypassed the selector valve. Truck runs great and I can still use the selector switch to see how much fuel is in each tank.
Question: How would I go about testing the valve to be sure it is actually the valve that is bad and not something in the switch? The fuel selector valve has one wire - I have not followed it to find out where it leads to. I picked up a new universal selector valve from Napa - but I would rather confirm that the other one is toast before I install this one.
Thanks.
