I done a lot of research into exactly what your proposing to do and found the following.

A lot of the state side fellas take the practical view that it is not the 3" OEM piping that is the problem causing high EGTs under load, it is the staggered & baffled OEM Muffler box. Simply straight piping it (I believe you've done that) or lopping out the staggered OEM box and fitting in a straight through muffler (they call it the BTM Mod (Big Truck Muffler)) is sufficient enough of a fix. And a hell of a lot less expense and stuffin' around.
The point is that the Turbine outlet is 2 1/2" and the increase in the bore of the OEM downpipe is more than enough to get the gasses away. It's when it hits the staggered and baffled box that the build up commences. Add that to the extra length of the tail pipe and those addition frictional forces only add to the problem.
My understanding is that a 'Normally Aspirated' (non turbo) diesel won't operate efficiently without a muffler to supply the back pressure needed for low down torque/grunt. However it is this action of squeezing (if you like) of the exhaust gasses out of the turbo outlet that supplies the back pressure on turbo diesels.
So unless you want to drag race ya 7.3, then big bore piping is not going to give a lot in my view.
I tracked down the closest straight through muffler to the BTM they use in states I could find here in Aust, lopped out the OEM box and ditched the tail pipe and dumped it out just in front of the rear tyre.
My GCM is almost never less than 7T and I pull in all terrain and haven't had a EGT problem at all.
Just another take on this for ya mate.

Cheers,
Reg

Thanks for the explanation Reg. If only I could visit SA and get it done as well. Maybe one day. The reason I would like a GVM increase is the same as yours, long range tank, assorted gear = an overloaded vehicle.

It is a small world. Imbil is a great place. I used to live at Dagun when I was young, but now I am near Caloundra.

Thanks for the heads up about the Bushtracker forum, I will check it out to see what other Ftruck owners have done.

Thanks

Jason

Just to add - pretty much all 4x4 effies (F250's or F350's) in Aus came with a 5200lb rated front end.

You can easily identify this by checking your front springs, 5200lb ones have the suffix "ADA".

I'll also add - the rating is a little obtuse, as the yanks do things a little different, their registration regulations are nowhere near as crazy as the ones in Aus, and the rating is only a "comfort" rating. i.e. the axle can take more, but you might be spending more time on the bump stops
The axle is actually rated up to 6000lbs, and if you order a set of Snow Plow front springs (I think they came on the camper package in the states as well) with suffix AFA the "comfort" rating goes upto 6000lbs too.

Hi Adrian

At the moment I am doing some research on getting my GVM increased to 4495kg (9900lbs). At the moment my GVM is 4219kg (9292lbs). Now I know this in not much of an increase, but by staying below 4500kg (9900lbs), I keep a cheaper rego ($1050, or above 4500kg about $1800-2000) and anyone can drive it on a car licence.
My truck weighs 3660kg (8061lbs) empty because of a very solid and heavy steel tray with 5th wheel hitch.
So when I add 4 persons, associated gear, long range tank, etc, etc, I will easily be over 4219kg.

Just a couple of questions if I could.
Where on the front spring is the rating and is there any documentation that I could show a QLD Transport Engineer.
I have found a couple of engineers who may help, but they require documents stating the capacity of the original springs if they are rated higher than the listing in the owners handbook.

Many thanks for your time

Jason

The part number is stamped on the rear of the spring - but it doesn't give a numerical weight rating, so unless you know what part number corresponds to what rating, its meaningless.

There should be a sticker on the inside of the drivers door (I think - it could be the passenger door???) that has the numerical rating of the springs.

G'day Adrian

Well this is getting interesting.
I have no such sticker on anydoors.

Is there any documentation from Ford describing the markings on springs and the subsequent ratings?

Also, is there any documents detailing Gross Vehicle Mass on an 03 F250 that I can show the Transport guys which indicates that the original springs are good enough for a higher GVM?
I just want to be able to state my case to the transport engineer that the vehicle is capable of a higher GVM either with original springs or with new upgraded springs or air bags.

Thanks for your help

Jason

Hi again Adrian

I checked the markings on my fronts springs, they are as follows
3C34 ADA
R 098 4

Can you advise me on what they mean?

Thanks

Jason

ADA's are 5200lb springs.

There should be a sticker somewhere which says what weight (it should stipulate the tire pressures too for that weight).
It should also be located in the Owners Manual I believe as well.

Hi Adrian

Thanks for that.

I have been looking for some Ford documentation about GVM ratings for USA F250 2003' so I can show the Transport guys.
Is there anything that you know of that might help me.

Thanks

Sure thing, you can get them off the same site I linked to with the Trailer guide, but under the body builders section.
https://www.fleet.ford.com/truckbbas.../techspec.html

More specifically for your truck, you would want to be looking here:
https://www.fleet.ford.com/truckbbas...essd_03abb.pdf

Note the 9900lb GVWR - thats a 4.5t GVM
I would be curious to know how you go.

Hi again Adrian

I finally found the sticker you have been talking about. Can you believe that someone put an "STP" sticker over it on the drivers door. I just can't believe why someone would cover it up, but I carefully peeled it off to expose the Ford sticker.

It states Front load carrying capacity = 5250 lbs
Rear load carrying capacity = 6210 lbs

So how does this affect my GVM?

Thanks

It shouldn't, but both of those items, in conjunction with a copy of the US body builders guide stating that the same truck in the US had a GVM of 9900lbs should be enough for an engineer to sign off on them increasing the GVM on your vehicle to 9900lbs.

Those stickers should just prove to them that you don't need new springs/wheels/tires/axles etc. as they will be well within their limit at 9900lbs.

Hi Adrian

I just thought I would keep you updated on my progress of getting my GVM increased.

Well, I drove 150km today to visit a vehicle engineer. He looked over my vehicle and at all the paperwork that I printed out about USA GVM's, etc.
He stated that the Queensland Transport Department does not allow him to increase the GVM on a vehicle in stock form as this is set by the manufacturer.
However, he said that if I fit airbags or heavier springs and have associated documentation showing increased spring capacity, then he can give me a mod plate showing a higher GVM.
So all I need to do now is decide if I want to upgrade my original springs or get some airbags.

Stay tuned.

Ok, thanks for clarifying it - sorry you weren't able to upgrade it, but at least you got a definitive answer.

A set of firestone airbags will probably be your cheapest option
