Tuner help!!
All right all my green handle friends out there. I want to get a tuner for my 2005 F-250 6.0L PS. I have been doing some search's but all that has caused is confusion! What make of tuners do you use, recommend or "say the hell away from"? I have looked at Edge, SCT, DP among others. I'm going on a month long trip towing my 32' 5th wheel and would like some more power and fuel mileage. Any help will be more than appreciated!!!

Well.......the general consensus is the SCT tuner with custom tunes. I just bought one and am very happy with the tunes I purchased from Matt @ gearhead. Matt offers a 3 tune package for 100.00
The most important thing is gauges gauges gauges, a 4" exhaust and a healthy engine....if not with tunes you will discover problems that are dormant very quickly so be careful with that.
You can purchase the SCT SF3 (comes with 3 pre programmed and room for 3 custom) from several locations and purchase custom tunes from several providers. Matt has great customer service and very nice tunes. I guarantee many will chime in and provide help. If you'd like I can give you the link to the cheapest price I found my particular tuner. Let me know.

ok, so i have an 03 cc dually, been running the edge w/ attitude monitor. descent power but horrible shifts. i ran for about 2 years with no real issues. heard lots of people stating the edge was a tranny killer, and i could tell from my experience too. so i just installed (about 20 min. ago) the street tune on my sct sft3(bought last week). i got it through eric at innovative diesel. about $429 with 3 custom tunes. i went with the street, tow and economy. none of the extreme tunes as i am still on factory head bolts. WOW !!! a huge power diff and the shifting is solid and amazing. even the edge on setting 5 is only compareable to the economy tune from eric. would definately recommend the sct, and so far erics tunes too.

Here you go buddy..
SCT SF3 Power Flash - Ford Gas & Diesel Vehicles - Truck Customizers
337.00 shipped.tax
The best tune writers are Matt @ gearhead and Eric @ Innovative. One of the posters (above) had it shipped with 3 custom tunes from Eric for 430.00. I have not run Eric's tunes but as you see if you buy it from him it will be basically the same price. Now it is up to you which tune programmer youu want to go with.
Good Luck

yeah i think innovative was $349 empty and $80 for erics standard custom tunes. $130 ish for 3 extreme tunes. honestly the standard custom tunes are more than enough for the average user.the sct are all over ebay for the same price. i just figured if i have to have someone write custon tunes for the truck, i might as well buy the tuner from them too.

Looks like I arrived late to the party. You've gotten good advice as to one brand of tuner to get, so that's where I would go.
One thing that isn't much touched on that I think is worth mentioning is the "more fuel mileage" part of the equation. Tuners are performance enhancers first and foremost. Yes, there is the potential for getting better mileage, but that depends on a lot of factors that you may or may not be able to control. You'll enjoy your purchase more if you place more emphasis on the "more power" part of the equation than on the "more fuel mileage". You may or may not see improvement, some get worse. It really depends on how you handle that new found power and what your truck is going through when you drive it. I'm not saying you won't see an improvement, I'm just saying it's still up in the air and I wouldn't bet on seeing an improvement. Not all do. In fact, if you luck at how tuner companies market that little tidbit, they do have caveats to it.

Okay, you are working here with a real newbie. I have a 2005 F-250 6.0L PSD. I will be using this truck to pull a 32' fifth wheel travel trailer. I want to increase HP and Torque to do this. And if the fuel mileage goes up, so much the better. From what I understand I need to buy a set of gauges and record something before I buy a tuner. What type of gauges do I need to buy and what systems do I need to monitor? Also, I do not have a lot of money to spend so the 4" tuned pipes, head studs and such will not happen. Guess what I'm saying is I need a plain Jane system, which maybe is not possible for what I need. Any help, advice, words of wisdom would be greatly appreciation!

A Scangauge II is the best bang for the buck. It will read everything but EGT and fuel pressure which, IMHO, are the two most important when you're towing. My advice to you is that if you're going to be towing a big load and you don't want to do your exhaust then DON"T do a tuner. Leave it stock and get the gauges.

this maybe out of your price range but i have a SCT TSX (touch screen extrem). it is a tuner plus its gauges. its shows all you need to know. boost psi, egts, (when you add the probe) ect, eot, pedel position, and many more. shows on the display in a gauge or just numbers in boxes. i like mine and im glad i got it. its just plug and play. when you add gauges you have to run wires and probes and sensors and more wires. the TSX i 2 peices. you have the dongle which plugs into the OBDII port and then you have the display. they work together wirelessly through bluetooth. the monitor i leave pluged up to a 12v outlet. it has a rechargable batt but i just leave it pluged up.
i bought mine from xdp. you can get it now useing there promo code for 10% off (memorial) for $773.10 shipped. like i said its kinda pricy but i like it. and of corse i have matts custom tunes. there are other options out there as far as the gauges. other guys here can give them to you.
