The OP says his truck has a 302/C6. The C6 was not offered until 1978 w/a 302 engine. The grille is the 1978/79 styles.

So the truck may be a 1978/79, not a 1976.
I've heard that several times, title says 1976 and the vin tag on the firewall converts to 1976.

1976 cab on a 78/79 frame?

What else could he check?

How about the casting numbers on your engine?

Power steering pumps were different. 76 would have a small dipstick and 78/79 would have a large cap type dipstick.

How about the date on the diff?

Is there anything different on the frames?

Just a thought.

It's not a 76 cab on a 78/79 frame...the cab is without a doubt a 78/79. The grill set up, the placement of the emblems as mentioned earlier...he could look at the engine, etc, but my guess is it has been changed, he would have to locate the vin number on the frame to check for sure...nothing wrong with the 79 he appears to have...if it is titled a 76, someone did a good bit of work to swap cabs...

There's a VIN on the firewall? The only ones I've seen have been on the driver's side door post and door as far as the cab goes. The cab could also be a 77 with the badge on the cowl. Maybe its a 77 built in 76? But if its titled as a 76 it's probably had some parts swapped like most of our trucks.

There is a VIN tag on the frame if I'm not mistaken (if I am wrong, please correct me). The reason I don't think it is a '76, or '77 is as it has been mentioned earlier, the grill is either a '79 or a '78 that the headlights have been switched to square. The Cab has the emblems on the upper portion. And the fuel tank is recessed, not exposed...Regardless it is a great looking truck, if the OP hasn't Titled it in his name yet, he may be able to correct it if the correct VIN number is located...

When I said it may have a cab swap I meant only the cab. The front end (forward of the cab) and the box may be original. As far as the badge placement, who knows. If it is a 78 or 79 the F O R D letters are missing off the front of the hood as well.

Good point fordguy. I have never heard of a SN on the firewall.

I would be very surprised if there is a SN on the frame

I'm not sure if the OP is as interested in this as we are but I would like to know what he has.

There should be two locations (again if this is incorrect, please correct me) on the frame rails where the vin# is stamped...passenger side, on top of the frame under where the alternator is mounted, the second somewhere around where the passenger seat mounts. Recommended a heavy wire brush and some cleaner; possibly a mirror to see the one under the cab. Look very carefully, lots of buildup is to be expected...

I'm not sure if the OP is concerned or not, but I would be very curious to find out as well.

You cannot go by dipsticks, because some 1973/77's have a steel dipstick, some 1973/77's have a plastic dipstick. And...peeps tend to swap parts around.

The "small" dipstick is steel, has a "shepherd's crook" for a handle.

1978: FoMoCo changed the P/S pump on everything, except Econolines. This new pump has a plastic reservoir and dipstick. 1965/77 pumps have a steel reservoir.

The P/S pressure hoses w/a plastic reservoir have a straight end with an O-ring on the pump end. Attach to the pump using a qwik disconnect fitting that's mounted to the pump.

1977 and earlier pressure hoses thread onto the pump.
There is no VIN 'tag' on the frame. The VIN is stamped on the top of the right (passenger) side frame rail in front of, or partailly under the cab. Or on the top of the left frame rail adjacent to the steering gearbox.

The VIN on the firewall (if there, or if found on the seat, floor pan or bed **) are located on buck tags used by assembly line workers.

The codes on buck tags are used to assure that the correct parts that match the specific vehicles order are installed on it.

Excepting the VIN, wheelbase, color code, codes on buck tags cannot be decoded.

The Warranty Plate (W/P) is located on the left door face below the latch, has the VIN and other codes stamped on it. 1976/80 has the exact year stamped on it.

But, peeps replaced damaged left doors with used doors. 99.9% of the time, they did not install the original W/P on the replaced door. When this occurs, the VIN on the W/P will not match the VIN on the registration.

There is no VIN 'tag' on trucks of this vintage, only Passenger Cars have it.

Beginning in model year 1968, all Passenger Cars sold new in the US are required to have a VIN stamped on a plate that is mounted on the left corner of the dash, visible through the windshield.

Trucks sold new in the US were not required to have this dash mounted VIN until the early 1980's (I forget the exact year).

** Beginning in the mid 1980's, the NHTSA required VIN's to be stamped all over the vehicles, on powertrains, sheet metal and etc. This law was enacted to "cut down" on vehicle thefts.

Look at your 2011, you will find the 17 digit VIN stamped on all sorts of parts. 17 digit VIN's were first used in 1981 (1980-Passenger Cars). 1961/80 truck VIN's have 11 digits, 1948/60's have 10.

I think I know the answer to this question before I ask it, but it never hurts to be sure. That being said can a 78 grill be swapped out for a 76 I was just wondering any info would be appreciated thanks

Yes, but IIRC you have to change the headlight buckets on the core support too, because the headlights are in different locations. 76's headlights are lower.

Also, that is one sweet Lincoln!!

Getting it ready for a Heart Transplant. Should have the new 302 back from the machine shop this week so I can start on assembly and hopefully have it ready to put back in this weekend.

Cool Update on Events, Got the Title back in the Mail and They Registered it as a 1970??? Weird...?

Anyway, here's a shot of the my last 2 projects... The 98 Mark and the 97 Thunderbird
