Before adjusting a cable that might not need it and creating more problems you might want to check the strg columns shifter shaft bushings for looseness as projectSHO89 suggested. The bushing can wear, the bushing clamps held by torx screws also can crack or loosen, the shifter shaft tube can crack as well. Unfortunately all these are hard to check since they sit on top of the column. A mirror and flashlight may help. You can also disconnect the shifter cable at one end and check to make sure the cable isn't seized.

there's a picture of the column here from someones ad showing the tube and bushings. since i have no idea how to post just the picture, if the moderators feel it's inappropriate please delete it or post just the pic.

I've been checking out some shifter problems my truck is having.
There are clamps over the tube at the top and lower ends of the column.
The clamp is cast aluminum.
It is held in place with two Torx bolts.
These clamps can fracture.
I found pieces of the lower one laying in the lower cover when I opened things up.

Thanks to Lime1GT for the link to the pic.
