DEF Tank replaced

Had my DEF tank replaced. The CEL was on and the tech thought it was the problem. Here is what he wrote, don't know what it all means but for the readers benefit I post it " verified concern. Installed IDS ran selftest p202d p20e8. checked oasis found ssm 21646. removed scr injector and performed flow test and check sample ok. performed manual regeneration was at 62%. performed scr reset and retest same codes. replaced def tank assembly and cleared codes. retest ok" 2011 w/17k miles bought May 2010.

not sure what to make of that... but the "performed manual regen" part is interesting. Do you have a cab/chassis? If not... then there is potential for an aftermarket product to trigger this, even on pickups!

I bought my 6.7 in May as well, 14000 miles CEL came on with the same codes. They ended up replacing the DEF pump.. Seems to work great now

There is a manufacturing flaw in some tanks. I had mine replaced a couple of weeks ago whem my CEL came on. Basically what my symptons were was low injector pressure. When the DEF tank was full pressures were normal but when the level dropped in the tank to X level the pressure dropped. We (myself and the tech) put our heads together and determined the pick up tube in the tank was sucking air so he ordered an entire new assembly and installed it. All is normal now.

Has anyone had trouble with their DEF only making it 5500 or so miles, and no it doesn't sit idle all the time and I rarely pull a trailer.

5500 is normal as far as I know. I don't think it is reasonable to expect much more in the summer especially.

I'm thinking they could have made it 6 gallons and allow me to make it to an oil change if that's the case.

Well, the 5 gal tank is the reason us crew cab short box trucks have the dang 26 gal fuel tank, if the DEF tank were bigger, fuel tank would be even smaller. Sheesh.

And, after a little over a year, here is what I think the DEF usage is like, driving condition going from most DEF use to least.

1. Towing in the hot summer months
2. Driving in the hot summer months
3. Towing in the cooler months
4. Towing in the winter
5. Driving in the winter

And, at idle almost no DEF is used unless it is a hot summer day. The DEF is used when a certain amount of NOx is detected, which is relative to the temp of the exhaust and air/fuel mix. I'm sure there is a lot of tech that I am glossing over, but just trying to share my experiences.

I've read about the small fuel tank but aftermarket figured out a way to build an 80 gallon option... $1000 plus install.

No. Seems okay. I have 9200 miles on the truck and I have put 2.5 plus 2.5 gallons of DEF in the tank, and the tank is not full.
