Reading other threads is looks like Ford pushes the 5w20 to hit mpg and epa benchmarks. Can't understand why the exact same motor outside the US calls for 5w30.

I understand the question but don't know the answer. I'm guessing 5W30 would work OK in all but the coldest climes, but if 5W20 gives more power and economy, would just as soon do that. How much money do people spend for a couple horsepower? If this can be had for free using a lighter weight oil, why would anyone be resistant to that?

From what I read the longevity is at question with the thinner oil.

From what I have read (and have chosen to believe based on the source) and experienced with my own 4.6, now at 105k miles, it is not.
