melted wiring harness... need some guidance

I have an 86 f250 6.9 diesel 4 speed.

Yesterday I was driving and smelled burning plastic. A minute later the truck sputtered and died. I tried restarting the engine but it would immediately die after firing up. Also the glow plug light would not come on.

I had AAA tow the car to my house and decided to work on it today.

When I opened the hood some wires had melted behind the passenger side battery. I replaced all of the wires I could find that appeared to be damaged.

Now the glow plug light comes on and I can hear the relay click but the engine won't fire. It sounds like there is no fuel getting to the engine. There is one black wire I cannot figure out where it came from or where it goes. I think it was a ground wire that was loose and hit a hot terminal which cause the whole mess to begin with.

I have searched high and low for a legible detailed wiring schematic with no luck. Does anyone know where I can find one? The manuals at my local auto parts store didn't have any diagrams.

Also are there any other fuses to check besides under the driver's side dash?

Should the fuel pump turn on with the key in the on position without the engine running? If I put my hand on the tank I cannot feel any vibration or hear the pump.

Any ideas? I'm stepping back for now before I pull everything apart and start over.

If anyone thinks specific pictures would be helpful, let me know what to photograph.

Thanks.

The starter selniod area next to the batt has 4 or 5 inline fusiable links that are design to blow incase of a dead short.... Like what happen to you for starters you need 12 volts going to your IP I think the selinoid is call the FSS it let's fuel pass thru the IP

You have a mechanical fuel pump on the side of the engine, You may not have noticed the glow plug light come on but it may have and cooked the plugs. put a test ligh on the + terminal of the bat, pull the connector off the glow plug and touch the light to the plug if it lights up is good if not its bad. You may want to wire in a manual switch for them. And as far as the FSS goes when you turn your key on you should hear a click from the ip. The FSS is the terminal on the ip that has two wires going to it, so you can also test voltage there

So it turns out the problem is the FSS has no power. I unhooked the 2 wire plug and jumped it to the battery and the truck started right up.

Now my question is where do those wires go?
Are they fused?
Can I delete them and run a new wire?

Try ohm out all your fuses to verify there all good then, check for power at the ignition swicth could be a melted or correded wire going in and out of the ignition .... It is mounted on the steering coulum just pass the dash 2 bolts and your column will lay on the seat so you can check it out..... I'm the mean time I belive u can run a toggled hot to inside the cab till you figure out your issue toggle on and start your truck toggle off and your truck will die......

Well, by my diagram, the FSS wire is a RD-LT GN (Red with a light green stripe) wire that connects with another RD-LT GN wire from the fuel heater, then it connects with another RD-LT GN wire from the glow plug controller, and a blue fusible-link. The other side of the fusible link connects to a RD-LT GN wire coming from pin I1 of the ignition switch.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info everyone.

Turns out there are 2 RD-LT GN wires coming out of the glowplug harness.

The blue fusible-link burnt up and when I spliced the wires together I only saw one of the RD-LT GN. Got them both hot now and everything works fine.

Thanks again.
