I would sit at about 170 with an outside air of 80, and that is while towing the 5er. Over the mountain passes I did see 225 deg in 60 deg air, but that was a 10-12% grade for 6 miles and I was running in low gear and rpm at 3500, but it did help it cool off quicker once I started to descend the other side.

I was not overly impressed, but my camper is heavier than yours and I have than lowly gas engine.
Does that mean you are going to switch to a Diesel?

If that money trees starts to grow soon I will. I just can't justify it. Mine is paid for with 77,000 miles and I avg 9 mpg towing the 5er. A diesel would maybe get me 12-13mpg towing, so until I find a good deal probably not.

I would not say they run that hot, it is just not the best trans ever and the heat really hurts them.

I see now Mike. That makes more sense. I have replaced all the tranny fluid since i bought the truck.

You can certainly try the spare that I've got and see if it fixes your problem.
I probably will at least borrow it from you Chris. Problem is I really won't
know until I run the camper down the interstate for an extended drive.

Looking like a good idea.

Not really but they gave us that rediculously small stock cooler so it just adds to the tranny being the major weak link in the truck.

Jay, I know how to solve your problems. Let go get a cooler of off a Peterbuilt and we will just mount it in the box above the cab like a light bar. You should not have any issues than, and you would also have more cooling capacity than Cory.

Not that it runs that hot but more the fact that on the 7.3's Ford just way undersized the trans cooler.
