real world mpg in ecoboost 4x4

I have tried midgrade and premium fuel. No help. The manual states that the engine will produce more power with premium fuel. One service manager stated that while true, it would not help with fuel economy as the program is setup for power instead. Bottom line - did not help mine.
Mine has all the latest programming. Only thing I have found that helped was turning off trailer sway. And that is not 100% but overall it has helped.

On my trip home from Colorado I ran 91 or 93 the whole way. On the way out I used 87.
Will try the sway control. I'd be interested in losing some of the power and gaining mpg!

Thanks to both of you who responded. I'll try to turn off the sway control this weekend and see if it does some good. Will post the results next week.
Nice to know I am not the only one with this issue. Right on about the Honda lawsuit, hope they win quickly so we can have some leverage with Ford.
Have either of you heard any results from using 91 octane fuel instead of regular? Also I heard someone mention having the dealer re-burn the prom in the computer, have they had any success in getting that done?

In another thread about MPG, I posted about a speed and mpg test I made driving a 4x2 on a long, straight, flat stretch of highway over a couple hours of driving. Just the difference between 72 mph and 68 mph led to a consistent change of 4-5 mpg. I can't imagine how much further it would have fallen if I had run it up to 80, but probably would not be surprised to see as much as a 10 mpg difference between 68 and 80.

Skizzo.. you are dead on! If I set the cruise at 65 I get over 20 every time on the highway. If I bump it up to 75, i drop at least 4 mpgs. I just got back from a great mpg test. The drive was 370 miles (round trip) from Tualatin, OR to the Bend area which takes me up through a long mountain pass. I had 4 people and all our clothes, food etc packed for a 4 day vacation. I got 19.4 going over and 23.5 coming back. I stuck to the speed limit (up to 65 mph) and coming home I got the advantage of coming off the mountains with a lot of down hill. I was extremely satisfied with my mpg's.

read this goofy:
New MPG Ratings
With the NEW tests, mpg are reported LOWER than they would have been before 2008 therefore it is EASIER to meet the new standards.
Understand now? And the max speed is 80, not 60 look at the high speed test.

Over all so far 16.9 13,000 miles 50/50 city/hwy
did average the best so far did over 500 miles 78mph 21.5 mpg this past weekend and this was after SHTF with about 20 miles of misfires 175 miles into a 700 mile trip, then after it calmed down I stopped to get something to drink, filled up and called the customer rep with ford I have been dealing with for this problem and gave her another piece of my mind how this truck is a death trap pulling into 80mph traffic.

Exactly! My 2011 FX4 SC EB with 3.73's, 6.5 ft. box w/cab high cap, 18" wheels does the same thing. I'm just coming up on 10M and it usually averages between 16 and 17 mpg (A/C off) in suburban stop & go driving (35-55 mph zones) and up to 21 mpg on the highway so far...as long as I stay under 70 mph. Over 70, the mileage begins to drop off and has since day one. Interestingly, there is 50 mph zone I drive regularly and last week, at a steady 50 mph, the truck was showing just over 27 mpg (making all the stop lights) for a 4-mile stretch right after I filled it and re-set everything! I wouldn't like to drive 50 all the time but I was impressed, to say the least. Jim

You definitely have something there. IIRC from my aerodynamics class in college, for a given object/shape, drag increases with the square of the speed. I may be mis-speaking. The basic idea is that if you double your speed, the drag increases 4X. Interestingly, that works the same for stopping distance which is friction/drag. If it takes 1000' to stop from 50mph, going 100mph would require 4000'.
I've just read this entire thread trying to decipher the truths and myths behind the ecoboost.
I'm currently running a 2000 F250SD SC 4X4 short box 5.4 manual trans with 4:10's. She gives me 14.5 city and 15.5 highway @ 65-70. Just ticked over 144K on the meter.
The other truck is a 2010 EXPY EL 4x4 with the HD tow pkg, auto, flex fuel. This is the primary road trip vehicle. With the wife and 3 girls, we needed the cargo space!!
Have a 27' TT with a dry wgt of 4800#.
Non-tow we average 16-17 doing 75 from Atlanta to Louisville, KY. We had the maiden voyage with the TT this fall and averaged 7.5-8.5 mpg (@70-75mph) for the trip with power to spare on the hill climb through Chattanooga TN.
I've perused a number of threads on the EB, the 6.2 SD, towing mpg with the EB and towing MPG with the SD and I'm just not sure what to make of it. With few exceptions, I don't see the EB doing much better than the wife's EXPY (non-tow) unless you drive below 65mph (a sure way to be rear ended anywhere near Atlanta). The real world #'s for the EB @ 70-75mph tow and non-tow seem close to the 6.2 SD. It even sounds like the 6.2 SD is matching or even beating my #'s for our EXPY by 1-2 mpg tow and non tow. My SD is a Beast but the wife's EXPY tows WAY better.
To anyone reading this far, east of the mississippi especially, what do you see on loooong trips tank after tank...tow vs non tow if possible but even just non tow would be good. On my road trips, I hand calculate avg mileage (reqd in the sd...optional in the expy). I use the odometer and the gas pump.
If I could get the wife's ride quality tow and non-tow in a truck, that would be nice. The reason I'm still stuck on the SD is that with a crew cab, you can still get an 8' box. Not so with the 150. I can't tell you how many times I've cussed my short box. Yes I will need the crew cab...3 kids. We do 1K round trip at least 6 times a year now that we have a camper, there will be numerous other road trips thrown in now too.

EcoBoost mileage
I too, have found that keeping just under 70 mph get me the best mileage non-tow. I have an '11 FX4 Scab with 3.73's, 18 inch wheels and cab-high topper with 13K on it. I do tow a 3000 lb boat and smaller toys. On trips with the boat, I average around 15.5 and with the ATV about 17.5. Non-tow, I recently averaged 21.1 (hand figured...the computer showed 20.7) for a 275 mile one-way trip. I kept the mph just under 70 for most of the trip and 65 mph for the remainder. I was also running a mid-grade, winter blend ethanol (oxygenated) which is not known for the best mileage. I live in Minnesota where this stuff was pretty well born but my thoughts on ethanol are for another day.
I have found the key to the best mileage in my truck is to keep it under 70 and use the cruiise control. At 68 mph, I'm running a little under 2000 rpms which is getting near the max torque range for the engine and it pulls up the hills with no problems and the cruise keeps the mph rock-steady. If I go over 70, I can see the mileage begin to drop off which is probably a function of both drag and gear ratio. Poor fuel has an effect as well.
I've seen a number of mileage complaints on this site and they may be very valid but I have not experienced poor mileage. My truck was one of the first (if not the first) EB FX4's in the city, delivered in early April of '11. Where my '04 5.4 FX4 SC 3.55 17 inch got 11-12 mpg, this one consistently gets between 15 and 16 and would blow the doors off the '04. The '04 would get 16 tops on the highway non-tow. I've learned that driving technique plays a huge part in getting good mileage with this truck and the instant mileage readout helps a lot to control the impulses to stick my foot in it. It is fun to stomp on it once in a while though. It's pretty quick for a heavy truck. I guess the newer ones are somewhat lighter. I really do like this truck!
