the only fuse worth checking would be the fuel tank selector valve. im not sure of the fuse number though. the owners manual should say. the valves have stuck between tanks sometimes. thats why only switch mine in a town. if you pull the line on the suction side of the fuel pump do you get fuel? if so reconnect it and pull the line out of the pressure side and crank the motor for a second if it doesnt spray out the lift pump is toast.

Oh and the check engine light may be on until you get oil pressure. Just a thought.

When i did my head gaskets i just put a new one on because it was easy to get to. I think it was in that 50 to 60 dollar range. some guys just bypass it and put an electric pump in. if you do that take the old pump off and get a block off plate for a small block chevy and plug the hole. Did you pull the pump off by any chance when you had the moto apart? cuz maybe you didnt get the arm in right. oh and thafs the only pump in the system on these critters. the engine light shoul come on before starting and thats just its way of showing you bulb is ok.

Oh yah, mechanical lift pumps can last very long, but they do eventually wear - just be thankful your died in the way it did, instead of rupturing the diaphragm and promptly filling up your crankcase with fuel... What pump did you put in, do you remember the brand name?

Thats good to hear. Most of my idi knowledge coms from trial and error and I'm ony 24 years old it helps that we had a lot of them on the farm, but in all they are very simple and basic. With these motors its either fuel or air and air is easy to get so its always fuel. the psd's are full of electronics and sensors and to me more to go wrong. Theres something to be said for these motors the newest being 17years old and the number of them still out and still working is impressive.

1985 6.9l out of fuel?

I am out searching for info on fuel issues on the 6.9l...came across your conversation from last year. So, I have no fuel in the lines at all that i can tell. Nothing coming from the tanks and obviously nothing pumping up to the filter from the fuel pump.
I cannot figure out if I am out of fuel, I know the front tank is completely full and when I switch it to that tank and crank and crank, i am getting nothing in the filter or the 'before' fuel pump lines.
If my fuel pump was bad, wouldn't you think there would be some diesel fuel in the lines when I removed them at the fuel pump?
I don't know if the fuel line is clogged from the tank, but I really cannot imagine that to be the case.
I just cannot imagine it would take this much cranking to even get a drop of fuel to come out the fuel filter housing...just bizarre.
