I have 285/75/16 on my f250 with stock wheels and they work just fine. looks stock. I don't have the 285 spare, because i figure I can get away with the stock spare for temporary use, and a bigger tire wont fit with my trailer hitch.

Only problem that might crop up, would be different size tires on a differential with limited slip. The different size tires would rotate at different speeds, wearing out the clutch packs faster. More trouble, but maybe put spare on front then move front tire to rear tire that is flat.

285 75 16 will work fine on the stock rims.
I would swap out the spare for the new size. As mentioned above, if you have to run it on the rear, you could cause other issues with different size tires. The front wouldn't be so bad so long as you didn't use 4x4.

That's why I carry 2 jacks (well partly, because I carry a hydraulic bottle jack that doesn't suck like the stock screw jack, so the stock one stays in it's mount unused most of the time). I run 34s and my spare is a 31.5", so if I blow out a rear and the trip home involves highway speeds, I get to change two tires. Not a huge pain, and it beats spending the extra $180-$300 on a 5th tire.

If you're towing or hauling anything heavy, carry the right sized spare. Or if you have significantly larger tires like 37s, a spare of the same size or closer is much more important.... I wouldn't want to see a 37 on one corner and a 31 on the other.

As the others have stated no problems running a 285/75/16 on the stock wheels. I have seen some push up to a 315/75/16 on the stock wheels. I have run 285's on my last two trucks with no issues.
