Fuel economy
My story.
When I was looking for a truck to buy last year I was looking for a F250 or maybe a 350. I'd settel for a 150 if that was all I could find with the money I had to spend. This was going to be my first truck and only a Ford will do. I was hoping to find an older super cab and at least a 390 engine. I wasn't sure if I wanted the gas guzzler 460. I thought "no, too much money for gas". So I kept looking in the camera ads and local news paper for a truck but found nothing to my liking. This went on for about 2 months.
Well one morning I picked up the paper to look in the classifieds and out jumped this add. "1975 Ford F350 Ranger, supercab, 460 cid, propane, $2,000", which is all I had to spend. I hesitated for a min., "Geez, a 460! Do I really need all that much engine"? But the truck was everything I wanted. Opportunity was knocking and I thought I'd better answer the door. "Oh well, no harm in looking".
I went over to this guys house and he shows me the truck. Not in bad shape at all considering the age. No riped seats, dash in good shape, door panels in good shape, paint a little faded but a good buffing will take care of that. A little rust inside the bed but easily fixed. Only thing was the bed had a dent in the drivers side just behind the cab. No big deal really. "Ok, lets see the engine". He opens the hood and I look inside. I'm thinking, "WOW, look at the size of that thing!". "Power!". All thoughts of fuel economy left my head as I stared at that powerhouse. He started it up and it purrs like a kitten. "OK" I said, "I'll take it".
I have since put it on gasoline with a Holley 750 cfm carb. and flowmaster exhaust. I also have a 460 project engine with D0VE heads sitting in my garage that I plan to warm up a little bit when I rebuild it. I got plans for my baby.
How does that saying go, "If you have to ask how much is it, you can't afford it".
Economy? We don't need no stinkin' economy!

Fuel economy
These engines in heavy, brick shaped trucks are not the ideal solution for economical transportation.
No, of course not.
They are, however, ideal for moving 4 ton trailers. At that they excel. They only thing that might be better is a diesel and I didn't want one due to additional cost, noise and being questionable as a daily driver.
