"Shelby drop"

Hi,
I was just reading about what was referred to as the "Shelby drop". Has anyone here done this upper control arm relocation on a 67 Ranchero?
If so how did it work for you?

Thanks,
Ken

Now, my biased opinion. I had a stock '65 289 Mustang with 14x7 wheels, good shocks, and a variety of tires--F70 Polyglas, F60 BFG TA, FR78 no-name radials. I could push it past the Polyglas pretty easy, but not the BFGs. By the time I put the FR78s on, I didn't do that so much anymore.

A Ranchero already suffers a low nose compared to the back due to the higher rear spring rate out back. And, it suffers a terrible front/rear weight ratio (I would think, don't have the numbers but they can't be good) So you're not going to turn it into a slot car.

So, what I would do with your money would be a bigger front bar with new bushings. The biggest you can get.

And new wheels. 15x7 or even some 17x7 or 17x7.5 wheels with 50, 45 or 40 series tires.
(My neighbor did this with a '65 Mustang and some Torquethrust D's, looks like it belongs)

You will not be able to stay in the car with the grip you get with that combo, and you won't have drilled into your vehicle at what could be a very weak spot in the works--see some comments in the above links.

I have also heard people say this gives you bad bump steer, but nowhere in those links do they discuss that, so that may be wrong.

Thanks for the info 85e150six4mtod. This is driving me crazy, I have raced SCCA for 20 years. I found this in a field without an engine so I have no idea about how they handle or how they sit. This is why I appreciate the help. I am starting with new springs, shocks, poly bushings, 1" sway bar and all new joints.

Really trying to remember but I think I was told to stay away from using the poly bushings on the front struts. Sure wish I could remember. Mgracr is right in saying they were not built to race but sure are fun to drive when done right.

Hi,
This was originally a 289 with a C4 in it. The engine and trans were in the back. I you remember about the poly bushing on the struts give me a shoot. I am having fun playing with this.

Thanks,
Ken
