Spin-on trans filter

Would there be any negative effects of mounting the spin-on trans filter behind the transfer case, routing the hose from the rear of the tranny into the filter, and then returning to the rear of the tranny?

I just added the Diesel Site external spin on filter.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...ny-filter.html

It is plumbed the way that you describe. I didn't have anywhere inside the frame to mount it.

I wouldn't think so as long as it doesn't cause a significant head pressure. I'm interested. I ordered he same filter setup and TRU-COOL last night for the new tranny I'm going to order.

I installed my spin on filter on the inside of the frame rail, between the radiator and the engine cross member. There is room there to install if you choose. I ended up buying all the parts and fabricating my own bracket for the mount. It works out really well in that location as the cooler lines are right there.

I did mount a pressure gauge on the inlet side of the filter along with another transmission temp sender. This way I can see the post cooler temp, and the pressure gauge will show if the filter is bypassing or not. I eventually want to install two pressure senders and route them to an electric gauge in the dash, where I can monitor the pressure of pre and post filter from the dash.

Here is the write-up I did on it.

Great writeup Ken. I've been looking at the available kits for a little while but haven't wanted to spend the money. Thanks for the parts list at the bottom of the writeup.

I like the location of Kens filter setup. I am planing to do mine soon. One question, do you want to use pre or post cooler for the filter?

I like Kens install but can't find 1/2" cooler line locally and that is what I wanted to use.So my 6.0 cooler has been laying on the shelf for about 3 years

It is easiest to do it post cooler as the lines are simple spring clamp connections. The pressure is also less post cooler than pre-cooler.

The advantage of doing it pre-cooler is the cooler should never get any debris in it from failed parts in the transmission as it would be filtered before the cooler.

One dis-advantage to doing it pre-cooler it the possibility of increasing the pressure at the transmission cooler by-pass valve and causing a short circuit of the cooling system. IIRC the bypass tube is set at something like 45 psi?. For some reason that number sticks in my head, but not 100% on that.

Carquest can get the cooler hose for you. They can get it bulk or in 3' sections. Napa also had it, if I wanted to wait a day or two.

Search for Gates 27065 that is a P/N for 3' sections. 25' sections are P/N 27066

Online it is available here, 1/2" Transmission Cooler Hose

I installed mine with 6' of hose! That should be all you need.

Seems like pre cooler would keep you from contaminating your cooler and having it act as the filter and plugging. But I'm not for sure about that just my opinion.

Ken, I want to put a hydraulic, tranny, and lube bypass filter where you have your bypass filter mounted.

Hydraulic, Tranny, and lube bypass?

Or do you just mean the tranny filter? I also have an engine oil by-pass filter installed on mine, but it is behind the transfer case on the left inside frame rail.

I'm planning on mounting all three where you have your lube bypass.
