license plate light
Is there a law on the rear license plate light
saying i need one on a 59 truck
the plate itself is visable.
personally missing a light does not have an affect on my safety
so i dont mind doing without one.
but i dont need extra heat being attracted to my truck if you know what i mean.
ill bet if they get a close look at her shes probably pulling a few illegal moves
so i dont want unwanted attention.
saying that i should probably just mount a light.
But im still curious about the law.
Thank in advance for the help as always.

I guess would depend on your state's laws. Missouri REQUIRES the rear plate to be illuminated and visible for some number of feet, I don't remember how many. No plate light is a really good excuse to pull you over and investigate you further. I would eleminate that reason and put on a light.

I'm sure it may vary state to state, but so far as I know every state has that law. Rear license lights were on vehicles way back to beginning times, so they would fall under the department of anything that came on the vehicle from the factory has to still be there. On our trucks, they were originally incorporated into the tail light assembly. I know in Washington, they do require a rear license plate light, and I have no doubt Cali does, as well. I was pulled over, years ago, by a cop looking to harrass young people because I had my rear plate temporarily taped in the window and it didn't have a light shining on it. Yours being a '59, assuming a styleside, there would have been a light for the plate under the center of the bed.

A DMV once said that the police need to be able to read the license plate at a minmum of 50 FT day/night. So those, trying to mess up the red light cameras, who put mud, scratched plastic, colored plastic, blurred plastic over the license plate or use the tow bar to destroy the plate are all illegal and can be stopped using the 50 ft rule. If police decide the use was intentional, that another ticket. chuck

Are you sure you don't have one? They were stock on our trucks. They're tucked up under the skirt of the bed, dead center of the plate, and you can easily miss it.The glass lens is frequently available NOS on EBAY, but maybe it's just a burnt bulb/bad ground/corroded socket.None is required for the front plate,AFAIK.
