Mark, the earlier ones were red like mine, the later ones were a lighter blue/green. Off the top of my head, I don't have the exact color specifics on the later ones. These engines are 20 years my senior, too.

The '52 advertisements show they were green like the other '52 engines. I've read here and elsewhere that Detroit Diesel green is close. Chuck says it's '52 Lincoln green and recommended Bill Hirsch. I'll do a scan afterwhile and post the artist's idea of what they looked like. Stu

That's what he told me, and I painted a generator with it and it does look good.

Head bolt heater. My F3 had one, I believe it was the first I had seen. I was used to seeing the tank heaters or the like on older vehicles.

Engine Colour List This chart is for V8's, and is one that mtflat has shown me in the flathead group. (it's also posted on the HAMB)

In 1952 the mileage maker six (or is it cost-clipper, I don't know the difference) was introduced. According to Don Bunn's book ( Classic Ford F-Series Pickup Trucks ... - Google Books ), it appears that engine was blue. The 254 L6 was still being used for the bigger trucks, and I'm assuming remained the same as the earlier colors. Coupled that with the letter to Mr. Degnan noting the 254 was different, I wonder what color the big six changed to? I'm assuming light green like Stu mentioned, in 1951. Wayne's F6 parts trucks appear to be that color as well. I can't remember what years those trucks were. Mine was a 1950 and earlier.

My trucks are a 51 and a 52. I'm going to the shop today and I'll try to do some archaeology. I'll let you know if I find anything.

thanks for the help guys, looks like its gonna be green and black. i think i can handle that. and i was thinking that was a block heater but i cant believe they put it in the place of a head bolt. one last ? is are the head bolts strong enough to lift the engine. it got loaded and unloaded with a chain around the front mounts and rear of trans but it will go in with a chain on the head bolts if they are strong enough. i dont need it to fall and then everyone say,"everybody knows you cant do that!" thanks again and have a Merry Christmas everyone!

People lift sbcs by the carb studs. I've lifted a flat 8 by using four intake manifold bolts to attach a plate. I've seen guys use a head bolt on each side to attach an L-shaped bracket to lift 8s. Don't see why two head bolts on a 6 shouldn't work.

That truck in the Don Bunn book was "outed" in another thread as being incorrect on a number of points, one of which was the color of the engine. I guess you could say it wasn't what it appears to be...

Why am I not surprised, lol.

I remember someone posted a pic of one a while back that looked green when the discussion was about the decal on the valve cover.

Here's some pics of the 254 in the '52 F6. It's definitely green. There's green on the intake manifold, and remnants on the head and water pump. The generator and bracket is black, along with the coil bracket, spark plug wire bracket and oil filler pipe. The fan and water pump pulley was also black. Hope these help.

This is the side of the block on the '51 engine. It looks like it could be a different color, almost a silvery-blue, but I suppose it could just be discolored from age. I don't know. It doesn't look anything at all like the '52.
