6.2 V8 vs. 6.8 V10 vs. ??? (gas engines) thread

I'm on the fence on trading in my 05 V10 on a 6.2, kinda waiting to see what changes are coming in the spring to see if it would be worth waiting any longer to give up a tried and true reliable V10... Tough to swallow a loss or torque going from the 3v V10 to the 6.2, even though the rest of the truck is getting a bit tired...

If it ain't broke don't fix it! Keep the v10 if it only has minor repairs. I had to get a new vehicle because the repairs on the cummins goat I was driving were about to break the bank! Eco boost would be a gread addition but I had no choice.
All the dealers I spoke with thought I was crazy for wanting the 4.30 gears but inane never drove an auto with this little up shifting.

I'm on the fence about trading in my '07 3v V10 on a new 6.2L V8 pickup. If I do, it will be a F-250 regular cab 4x4 with the standard 17" wheel&tires, but with optional 4.30:1s. That's why I wanted to find this combo on a dealer's lot to test drive. I've only driven 6.2L trucks with standard 3.73:1s, and optional 18" tires&wheels. With 52 lb.ft. of rated torque less than my V10, it wouldn't be a good comparison.

In My opinion the V10 would probably be the choice for heavy haulers But, alot of that would have to with the terrain and distance that one would be pulling.I miss my Diesel when I'm out on the highway running 70mph but around town I don't feel there would be any added benefit. Prior to the five star tuning(thanks Mike) I was pretty dissapointed with the V10 performance I pull about 4000lbs and felt I shouldn't of notice a small trailer with that combo. But what has me thinking of a 6.2 or a 6.0 GM is this thing just gobbles gas like it is going out of style.I did research it before I bought it and at the time thought there wouldn't be enough difference between the 5.4 and the 6.8 for the added performance. Now I'm re thinking that my self!

What type of gas mileage are you getting with your V10?

I went snowmobiling up to northern WI this past week,I didn't check it going up but I hand checked it coming home not much wind and one sled in side about 3000lbs total and was 7.6mpg running between 70 and 75 mph. I used to get about 12mpg running 72mph with my 06 6.0 super cab on the same route.DSC01019.JPG

Sorry, not interested in a supercab truck. Must be a regular cab 4x4. I'm thinking base F-250 with only ESOF system, roof lights, 6.2L gas engine, 4.30:1 electronic locking axle, and LT265/70/17 OWL all terrain tires. That's basically it. Black grille&bumpers, crank windows, base seat. Figure getting Sterling grey because it will look good with black trim & silver base wheels. Then again, this will ONLY happen if I get a cheaper monthly payment & no money down. I know people who have done this, so.....otherwise I have a creampuff F-350 V10 4x4 to drive around a few more years. Maybe, in the meantime, Ford will put the stronger 411/434 6.2L from F-150 into F-250/F-350 pickups for 2012. I still love my V10, but I want to lower monthly bills. I might not want to get rid of my current truck. I'm torn.

Just going to bring this back to life to see if anyone has any more input since the 6.2 has been out for a few more months now.
I agree that Ford is tricky with their motors lately. Take the new diesel and how you could get a reflash for more power. If they make a 3v 6.2 I'm quite positive they are not uprgrading anyone's 2V. It's all about marketing to keep sales up by boasting who has the biggest set, I mean motor. The only one who suffers is the consumer who thought they were buying the latest and greatest. Kind of a little kick to the set.
I like my V10 but have no comparison except for paper numbers. But it is hard to argue with the power numbers and where the power is made (rpm). But the other good point is the 6 speed transmission. Maybe I should go test drive for my own research . I think some good points were made in that Ford kept the V10 in the 450/550 and now in the 650/750
Also in regards to the mention of bad mpgs at 70-75mph. My parents current trip around the country hauling their 9k travel trailer with a 6.0 3/4 Chevy noticed a drop in 2 mpg's driving in the 65mph range vs the 55-60mph range. The higher rpms must cause more fuel consumption.

The V10 I had defiantly had more torque and you can feel it. Especially when towing. That does not mean the 6.2 is a slouch by any means. I do like the fact I am getting around 2mpg more mpg on average. It looks like it will be much easier to work on as well. It would be nice to have the mileage of the 6.2 with the low end grunt of the 6.8. If they increased the bore you would or even better the stroke it would increase it. As soon as you did that the mileage would go down so you can't have both.

Yes that is my guess as well. I am quite happy with mine. It runs down the highway at 21000lb combined weight just fine. Does it do it with the ease or pull out and pass as quick when towing as my diesels did? No it doesn't. I didn't expect it to either. Plus I don't have to put up with all the headaches I had with my diesels. When everything is considered it is the perfect truck for my needs.

Yea I don't think there is any question that diesels are the power plant of choice for heavy towing with power. But I think the glory days are running short due to emissions and high initial cost. I'm sure they'll still out sell gas HD trucks but more people are looking at gas options. if the do come out with a new 6.2 with more power from 3v or ecoboost it's a shame they just didn't do it from the get go. But that's strategic marketing to keep sales rolling along.
