E4OD limp mode

Hey guys, I have a 1996 f350 with the powerstroke and the auto E4OD. My tranny recently started going into limp mode (and O/D OFF light blinking). Is there any way to read the trouble codes for this without going to a dealer or repair shop (or buying a fancy scanner)? I went to autozone, but they said they can only read "check engine codes." Thanks in advance for the help.

-Johnny

Unfortunately you will need an OBD2 code reader, nothing fancy just a standard code reader.
Some obvious things are that speedo and tach need to be good.

Yeah the obd2 scanner they have at autozone showed no codes, so i dunno, is there some special code scanner for tranny codes?

You might get a better response in this forum further down the page: 1994.5 - 1997 7.3L Power Stroke Diesel - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums

There is not a special code reader for transmission codes. Any OBD2 reader should get them.
See if you can find a transmission shop that will read codes for free, some will.

Would a 96 F-350 necessary have to be OBDII?

I looked at a 96 F-250 few months back, it was OBDI.

And yea regardless the OBDII reader would get em anyway if all is working, power to the port etc, and it has any stored for it.

Let us please keep the unnecessay comment out of this thread/

OP you truck is not required to comply with OBDII. Most scanners will read the generic codes but will not read the specific codes that are generated by your truck. I have the same issue so i bought AE to diagnose it.

The last time i had a blinking OD light it was the VSS sensor in the rear pumpkin. Sometimes they just need to be pulled and cleaned. I thought that there was a sequence of flashes that the OD light would give you a code but i cant seem to find the chart now.

Oh well my o/d light just flashes continuously at the same pattern. just on - off - on - off. Does anybody know what fuse it is that I should check? And how does the VSS remove? Oh and if i pull the neg on both batteries to reset the computer, the amount of time it takes to come back is completely random. Sometimes 2 minutes, sometimes 2 days. Thanks for the help, guys.

EDIT: Any wires anywhere, or pins, that i can meter for continuity? Does anybody know what kind of resistance the vss should have if I do meter across it? megawatt, what is 'AE' ?

AutoEnginuity® - OBD2 Scan Tool - Professional PC and PDA Diagnostics I assume this is what he meant by AE.
VSS should, I think, ohm out at 700 to 1400ohm when cold. If yours is in that range it is probably good.

Well, I've had the truck to a mechanic three or four times now, he's replaced the pcm, the solenoid pack in the tranny, the o'd control switch. It went away for a about a week, and now it's back again. If anybody in the jacksonville, nc area has a code scanner that will tell me exactly what is going on, or knows of someone that can accurately read this trouble code for free, I would very much appreciate the help/info. Also, I never checked the VSS. How is that connection made on the pumpkin? Does the plug just snap in, or is it held in by some kind of set screw? Thanks for the help.
