C-6 Rebuild Cost?
#32
I gave a C6 to our trans. specialist here at the Ford dealership for a complete makeover - TCI rebuild kit with shift-kit, Ford Racing R-Code servo, Hughes 2500-stall converter, and a new governor - parts and labor $750. He did the rebuild under-the-table at home mind you.
Nice 1st to 2nd tire chirping came free

Pulling the '69 390 and tran out of my '72 F100 to take down to A&I engines in Redding. Long block, balance and rv cam - $2500. They have a great rep - I'm happy. They recommended a tranny shop nearby, so I'll take mine there. My question is, is it likely it will need a complete rebuild or a flush and service? It sounds like it would be money well spent, especially since my truck will be hauling us and our tent trailer to the Grand Canyon and other places? It has never given me any problems and seems to work fine.

You are resurrecting a 5 year old thread, you know? Regardless - if the shop is good, why don't you let THEM give you an informed opinion? If you tell them to replace the filter they will have the pan off and can tell you if there is metal in it or some other warning flag. Actually looking at your tranny should we worth more than asking strangers on the internet.

I was thinking of this forum as perhaps a bit more than asking "strangers on the internet", but I guess you're right, now that you mention it.
Re: "You are resurrecting a 5 year old thread, you know?" - no I don't know. I searched a subject, found something about that subject and responded. So, I've made some sort of faux pax in chat room protocall in my ignorance. Sorry to rock your boat - it won't happen again you can believe.

Actually here is here I apologize to you... the only reason I pointed the time lapse out is because a fresh post with few responses draws more attention than a resurrection with several pages. Didn't mean to come off as a dick (not sure how I could have phrased it otherwise, though.)
I agree that the forum is a great place to get help, too, and I hope you do get some better responses - but if it were my truck I think I would give more credence to the opinion of someone actually looking at what's in the pan, fluid freshness and smell, wear, leakage, etc. It's a common human tendency to trust your own past experience and consider it universal - but if a few years working in the car business taught me anything, it's that most vehicles are unique and what apples to one may not apply to the apparently identical next one.
Again, didn't mean to ruffle feathers - were just friendly suggestions to get you better data.

Sorry to drag up an old thread. Where would you recommend in the Sacramento/Roseville area to take for rebuild?
Thanks,
Mike

Shoot...not cheap????? How much cheaper do you want? The C6 is practially the easiest trans to rebuild. Have you priced out getting a newer trans rebuilt lately, you're looking at about double what a C6 costs. My last AOD and E4OD's were all between 12-1600 for stock rebuilds. Anyway, a C6 will run you between $6-800 for a stock rebuild at a shop, and would be about $300 in parts if you decide to tackle it.

I guess I should have started a new thread. My question was where in Sacramento area to take it. Also, your transmission is an electronic overdrive so I don't believe it would be a fair comparison or am I wrong? I sure hope it wouldn't cost $2300 for a plain c6!

Yeah yeah, thread is 5 years old.... I'll jump in tho.
I've rebuilt a dozen c6's. It isn't that hard.
Not including convertor's (because they vary highly based on intent)
Overhaul: $50 (soft parts, no clutches)
Rebuild: $180 (soft parts, clutches)
Rebuild that can handle 500hp with shift kit, #9 roller: $600
Rebuild for a 600hp engine, full roller: $800
Best place for parts:
C-6:
One of my roller builds:
Rebuilding the c6 in my Galaxie
^I didn't go into too much detail on all the modifications I made, the thread is mostly pictures to reduce the intimidation factor of building a c6 (it's easy)

Older thread or not, Drew that's an awesome rebuild thread you added. I probably would have gone farther into my C6 if I found it a year or so ago. I ended up replacing the main seals and putting in a transgo shift kit and Sonnax servo and called it done. It was shifting fine before but just leaking so that was 'good enough' at the time.
Here is a really good tear-down video I found for anyone looking to inspect their tranny:
