Some of the very early small block Ford engines had squirt holes in the rods. I saw themback in the 1960s at my buddys garage when they were rebuilding either a 221 or
260 CI engine.
6.9 diesel manual says piston cooling jets must be replaced by a reputable, professional mechanic. all of a sudden I feel less than qualified. I can't find tools or the parts, anyone out here have some insight on why they neeed to be replaced, if they need to be replaced, how to aim them after honing,
thanks
Jonathan
New Ford engines have this system. Any description of what the system is/does?
The system is present at least on the new 5.0 Coyote V8. According to 5.0 Mustang Magazine after talking with Ford engineers, the squirters were installed such that the pistons run cooler. This allows for using cheaper hypereutectic pistons in the 7000 rpm redline Mustang version of the engine rather than requiring more expensive forged units. It also helps with the engine's ability to run 87 octane fuel in the 11.0:1 engine without requiring direct injection. Fewer hot spots = less detonation = can run less octane.
