Fuel gauge not working

My fuel gauge broke yesterday.
I got home, drove down my road to the burn-pit, got out of the truck, and as i did i checked the fuel gauge and the miles to E, gauge was at the 1/4 mark and truck said 96 to E.

Get back in about 4 minutes later, i left it running for the time, and the gauge is at the 1/8 mark and my low fuel indicator was on in the dash, so cleared the low fuel light and miles to E now said 47. I figured it was because i was parked on a slight forward incline, so at the time i didnt think anything of it. so i parked it for the night.

This morning hop in, still shows 47 miles to E. Leave school get something to eat, then go to Hess to fill up. After filling up i start the truck and the meter is in the same 1/8 place, head home, park and check the miles to E, says 38 miles to E, even though i had driven about 32.

SO any ideas what could cause this? For now im gonna have to go by my trip counter when its time to fill up.

This is on my 05 f-250 BTW

Thanks

Just got back a little while ago from pulling my boat to work on it with a friend. Trip was about 16 miles round trip and the gauge slowly made it up to 3/4 tank, and the miles to E increased also.

If anyone knows a way to fix it to the way it should work that'd be great, if not ill have to live with a slow fuel gauge

I've had mine either stay on empty for a couple of days or read low for the last 1/2 tank too. It has fixed itself in a couple of days. The sending unit in the tank is expensive and a pain to get to.

I would recommend disconnecting the batteries for 1/2 hour or so to reset the truck and see if that helps. It's free and can't hurt. Every now and than I'll disconnect the batteries to work on it and it seems to run smoother after a reset.

Just my .02

get yourself a couple of BIGGER bottles of fuel system treatment..pour em in the tank (i did mine with about 1/4 of gas left, obvoisly teh stuff will work beter the less gas in the tank at the time when you pour it in.

if your lucky you can use it to break up the varnish on the sending unit..

i had teh same issue bout a year back.. couple bottles of fuel treament later and its been fine ever since..

course now that i said this tomorow morn it will prolly stop workin, hahah
