That's kind of surprising you wouldn't like a ZF behind a 302. I love it behind the 300, of course the inline six seems to have more grunt down low than than the five oh. If I slip the clutch a bit, I can take off in 3rd gear from a dead stop... not too shabby for a little six popper! They are total opposites: 300 is all low end and no top end... 302 is no low end and all top end. They make similar power numbers in stock trim, but at different rpms.

Here's a question. Has anyone ever put a input shaft seal in one?! I was going to, but its installed from the inside of the case! But now I'm going to have to swap it, mine leaks same with the BW tcase. Looks like where the tail bolts on tho.

There is some misinformation on the first page. You can find a 4 speed with that uses a hydraulic clutch system, but as stated later, they are a PITA to locate a good one, any 4 speed will bolt up as long as it has a smallblock bellhousing, the bellhousings all interchange on the 4 speeds. The M5OD-R2 is the one that came in the fullsize trucks while the M5OD-R1 came in the rangers/exploders, the M5R2 and the ZF DO NOT use the same slave cylinder or clutch line.......I realize the OP has already purchased his transmission but if someone searches the forums (yea right) and finds this, they will get some misinformation and don't need that. I'd love to get my hands on a ZF for under 450 around here.....you got a smokin hot deal on that setup for 235 and can proceed to kiss my *** lol. Even the M5R2's are selling for a pretty penny around here.

That's strange when I was looking up part numbers to see what I would need to interchange between the M5 and the ZF, everything crossed over. Everything went together nicely and it works flawlessly. However I do know some ZF transmissions did use an external slave cylinder. Mine had an internal slave, as did the M5 it replaced.

I have seen both. Mine has an internal slave, it came out of a 92 F250 with a 351w. A buddy of mine swapped a ZF with external slave into his 85 F350 dually with a 6.9 IDI. However, I'm not sure what year truck his transmission came out of. I'm not for sure if it was a difference in years, or another difference between 300 six/SBF, BBF, and diesel bellhousings. I also understand the diesel ZF transmissions were geared differently (close ratio I believe) than the gasser version. I would imagine because of the limited rpm range of the diesel engine.

Was not aware...like I said, I've never seen an internal one before.....yes, they are geared differently..the first gear in the gasser trucks is geared lower.

i've never seen a zf in a 1/2 ton, and until i do i'm still calling bull****. no ****ing way they used them in 1/2 tons, but only on I6's, and in bronco's. #1 late model I6 manual broncos are like unicorns(and i don't mean ghey, i mean non-existant) yeah occasionally one pops up, but i only hear about them never see or drive them. #2 why the hell do the f150's with I6's have the pos mazda tranny? #3 who the **** else has ever driven in a factory manual transmission half ton(or bronco) with a compound low(granny gear) first gear since they switched to 5 spd's???? (chirp chirp) that was the crickets you hear when there is dead silence. show me, and i'll believe, but until then i say it stinks like **** and i don't agree. no light duty zf's unless they weaseled them into that pos 7 lug light duty f250 abomination in the late 90's.

To my knowledge the FACTORY INSTALLED ZFs were only used in F250 and F350 pickups with either the 351, 460, or Diesel. I have seen a few later 90s Broncos with the 300/M5OD combo, I think it was more common in the 1/2 ton 2wd and 4wd pickups. If you ask me, I think none of them should have had the mazda tranny. They are geared way too high to be useful in any truck and they are about as tough as wet kleenex. Hell I broke one in a 2wd 1/2 ton with an I6 and 2.73 gears! Like I said, to my knowledge the lower geared heavy duty 5 speed manual transmissions were reserved for 3/4 ton and heavier duty pickups (not Broncos) with the bigger engines.
Dan, for some reason I sense that you may have had a few wobbly pops tonight eh? Good man, keep that blood in your alcohol stream in check!
